5 Ways to Organize and Upgrade Your Garage

By

Garages are usually not as organized as other parts of the house. They can be very neglected and messy. This is somewhat understandable if you almost never spend your time here. Nevertheless, if you have a hobby that requires you to stay in your garage for long time periods, then it’s time you organize and upgrade it. Note that you can completely transform this space into an organized space that is easy to maintain.

Move Your Mudroom to the Garage

If you have children, this is a great way to ensure your home doesn’t get dirty. Simply by moving your mudroom to the garage, any mess left behind will be in a space that is meant to get dirty. Make sure you have everything you would find in a mudroom, like storage bins for shoes, hats, umbrellas, and gloves, as well as hooks for backpacks and coats. The floors in this part of the garage should be able to hold up to everyday wear and tear.

Since everyone will be going through the mudroom after being outside, there will be everything from mud to snow on the floors. This is why it’s important to make sure they can be easily mopped and are scratch-proof. Don’t forget to include a place where people can sit down and take off their footwear. In order for the mudroom to be organized, you should consider designating a storage cabinet for each family member.

Use Cool Tech Features

A great way to upgrade and modernize your garage is to use certain tech features. For instance, you can retrofit your garage door openers to work with Wi-Fi. This will allow you to open and close the door remotely. You can also install a smartphone app that will show you whether it is open or closed. This is an incredibly helpful feature in case your kids often leave the garage door open. You’ll be able to install apps that let you turn the lights on and off remotely as well. Apart from that, you should get a humidity checker for optimal air quality.

Get a New Garage Door

Getting a new garage door will provide you with quite a few benefits. First off, the value of your entire home will go up, since people will fall in love with the exterior. On top of that, setting up a new door will prove better insulation, which will reflect on your utility bills. In case you don’t feel the need to get a garage door, you should at least insulate the one you have. This will make the garage temperature cooler during the summer and hotter when it’s winter. If you don’t know how to do this by yourself, you should call a tech experienced in garage door maintenance and repair.

Install Overhead Storage

Doing this will allow you to store everything in your garage without having to sacrifice any floor space. Keep in mind that although installing overhead storage may take some time, you will be able to do it yourself. With all of your stuff stored above the garage door, you will have all of the remaining space to organize it however you want. In case you don’t want to place everything here, you can use overhead storage for items you don’t use often but want to keep.

Use It for More than Just Storing Stuff

Your garage shouldn’t be used just for storing stuff. There are numerous ways you can use the space. In fact, it’s recommended you separate your garage into different zones. Aside from transforming a portion of the space into a mudroom, you can also create a home office or gym here. This can also be the perfect place for enjoying your hobby in peace and quiet.
