Hiking Log - Snakes and umbrellas

This is part 33 of excerpts from the trail log which was located on a New York portion of the Appalachian trail. For the post which explains this series, click here.  You can read all the previous hiking posts by clicking here.

Each new edition includes a quote from a hiker, along with this writer's insight into what the person might have meant. Your interpretation may be different!

Following is my selection of this week's thoughts of a hiker(s).

9-28-18 ?

Snakes don't use umbrellas. Nor do umbrellas use snakes. Bumpy letters are topographic words.

O-o-o-o-kay..... I will be the first to admit, I don't have a clue where this hiker's mind was when they wrote these words. Perhaps they just finished eating a drug-laced cookie? Maybe they had heat exhaustion? I don't think there's a real meaning behind these words but I'm going to address this entry anyway!

First, this entry is one of the only ones (or perhaps THE only one) that did not include a date. There was a week gap between entries so I don't know exactly when this hiker arrived. That being said, based on my thoughts on the first sentence, I believe the date was probably September 28th because....

Snakes don't use umbrellas. No, no they do not. That's because snakes have no arms, and they are also not human. Duh. What was going on in this hiker's mind? In trying to figure this out, I took this sentence literally. Why would this person be thinking of these things? And here's my explanation. It was probably pouring rain. And somewhere along the path, this hiker saw a snake. His mind saw the snake was sopping wet and he probably wondered if snakes cared that they were wet. And then he conjured up a snake umbrella.... No?

Nor do umbrellas use snakes. This hiker was definitely stretching reality with this one. Umbrellas are inanimate objects that don't actually DO anything. They can't use anything. I'm really thinking drugs were used in the making of these words.

Hiking Log - Snakes and umbrellasBumpy letters are topographic words. Topography is the study of the shape and features of land surfaces. Let's say topography was just the study of shapes and features. Then wouldn't all letters be topographical? And all words? But in reality words are not topographic. I don't think. I'm so confused.

As you can tell, this hiker's words did not resonate with me. What about you? Do you have any idea what this hiker could have possibly been thinking about? If you ARE the hiker (there was no trail name either), what were you thinking? Inquiring minds want to know.

Until next time, happy trails!

Must be the endorphins. I would get pretty goofy after running great distances NOTE: I’m still pretty goofy and I don’t run anymore 🤔 Kat Palmiotti

Thank you Ron and Alexandra Seigel  - I hope your day was wonderful as well!

Michael Jacobs - A different reality! That's a great way to put it.

That's true, Norma J. Elkins - Then they would seem quite harmless.

Ahh, Brian England - so you might actually believe that a snake may indeed carry an umbrella (not having a lot of rain, how would you know whether they do or not?)

Sheila Anderson - I have a feeling even the hiker wouldn't remember what he was thinking at the time he wrote this!

Grant Schneider - Anything we read into this is probably wrong!

Will Hamm - I'm assuming this is exactly the kind of thought a funny brownie might produce.

Now that might be true Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - tricky hiker!

A-ha, Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - so perhaps the endorphins created a bit of crazy. That could be.... or not!

Hello Kat,

So here's my take on it: I believe someone submitted long lost, never seen before notes for a new book by Douglas Adams.  I think this explains it...his books in order are:  The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy,The Restaurant at the End of the Universe, -Life, the Universe and Everything, So Long, and Thanks for All the Fish, Mostly Harmless,  and lastAnd Another Thing...

I think "Snakes don't use umbrellas. Nor do umbrellas use snakes. Bumpy letters are topographic words" follows his last book perfectly! Well, anyway, that's what I think and "no" I haven't been smoking anything :)

Kat Palmiotti - Makes no sense to me either. Perhaps the person who wrote it doesn't know English and didn't have a way to translate words? Or what if it's code words for something very important to other people who we don't really want to know?

It's a mystery!

Ooooh, Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP - code words! I could have such fun wondering what those words might mean, decoded!

Kat Palmiotti - Think Rihanna - Umbrella, under my umbrella.

Maybe the hiker is a male and he's the snake and maybe he got into a fight with his partner (umbrella). Definition of topography/bumpy. Well, you can figure that one out if that explains things.

Kat, it is obvious you put some thought into trying to understand the meaning of the entry and I think you have two very plausible explanations.

It probably was raining and he was soaking wet and wondered if the snake cared he was wet as well, and then just mused that snakes don't use umbrellas and umbrellas don't use snakes (snake skin instead of waterproof material) to protect others from the rain.

I think your explanation is also solid that he was making a play on "bumpy words" being topographical.

Kat, if Homeland Security needs some help in deciphering some ominous intercepts I think they need to give you a call for help!!!!!!    ^_~

Although the meaning of this comment alludes me, Kat Palmiotti ... it must have meant something to the person that wrote it.  Sometimes that has to be enough I guess ..

Chuckle, smile ... and move on hiking down that path, right??
