Prince George's County has a newspaper called "Women's Journal". While reading the newspaper, something caught my eye.

It said that Women account for over 85% of all consumer purchases

  • 94% of Home Furnishings.
  • 93% OTC Pharmaceuticals.
  • 93% Food.
  • 92% Vacations.
  • 91% of New Homes ( I am not surprised at all )
  • 89% Bank Accounts
  • 81% Auto Purchases
  • 81% Riding Lawn Mowers.
  • 80% Healthcare.
  • 66% PCs.

Women carry 76 million credit cards, 8 million more than men.

In 2001,US women's purchasing power constituted the number 3 market in the world;the collective buying power exceeded the entire economy of Japan ( That's interesting ).

By 2010,women are expected to control $1 trillion,or 60% of the country's wealth, according to research conducted by Business Week and Gallup.

Exit Realty Founder and C.E.O Steve Morris once said that "Real Estate is a women's business. Men just happen to be in it"-Isn't that the truth. And I just discovered a new niche to target my advertising: Women. These are good reasons why we need target women more when we advertise. Women have major buying power.

Lanre, I have an outside blog I am working on and I am writing a post about this very thing.  Not exactly, but that single women buy more real estate than single men.  81% of riding lawn mowers. . .  Go figure?

Naoma- Women are the big spenders. But they are also the great money managers of the family as well. Thanks for your comments.

Good post.  When staging you want to appeal to both sexes but let's face it - if the woman doesn't like the house the couple ain't going to buy it.  I had no idea that "we" had that much buying power!

The irony of this is, there are more men here in the U.S. It is one of few countries where men outnumber women!

Hi Lanre...Interesting statistics.  Thank you for sharing them.  Most of us probably had no idea to the extent women are making so many of the decisions.
