Multi-Gen Lifestyles - Kitchen Remodeling Update

Surviving a Kitchen Remodel

Life is busy at our Multi-Gen house with the kitchen remodel in full swing. Right now, it's chaos central. Naturally, the biggest headache is trying to cook and clean up. A Weber grill with a side burner is getting a lot of use and a utility sink in the garage works well for washing pots, pans, and dishes.

My sis and her husband, who live on another level of our home, offered to let us use their kitchen, but honestly, carrying things up and down the stairs would just add to the workload. Plus, it would be pretty crowded with all of us cooking different meals - especially at the same time.

Mom, who lives with us, is a good sport about the remodel and is getting used to the glamping aspect of the ordeal. Her morning oatmeal is made in the microwave and we try to keep her favorite foods around. It requires thought, prep, and planning. So far, so good.

What's up with the Blazers?

Plus, mom is a big Portland Trail Blazers fan and has been pretty distracted with her job as their number one cheerleader.  She's even been wearing her team jersey to her Silver Sneakers classes - we're sorry they've lost the last 3 games, but we also respect and admire the Golden State Warriors.  May the best team win.

Patience is a virtue.

Back to the kitchen. Hopefully in a few days, we'll be able to test out the new double ovens. However, installing the new gas stove, the farmhouse sink, and the dishwasher will have to wait until the counter tops are in place. Since the counter fabricators are booked until May 30th, it will be at least a month before we get our new quartz counters.

We've been warned, remodeling is an endeavor in patience. It certainly is, but we know the end result will be worth the hassles. Tonight, we're taking a break and having take-out. Woohoo! Happy Sunday.

Hi Debb... I lived through one of those kitchen renovations once and said never again! I don't envy you. Since then, I've had renovations done before I moved into a new home and the last two times just built brand new homes to avoid renovating. Meantime, can't wait to see the finished product.

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty we are sure going to appreciate being done. And, honestly, we can handle 6 weeks of inconvience to enjoy a new kitchen.

Good morning, Michael. We keep our eye on the finish line. ;) The old kitchen really needed updating. And, we are both most excited to have a propane cooktop( Natural gas isn't available here) - we've been using an old  electric JennAire since we moved in, four years ago in September  - neither of us like to cook with an electric stove.

What a project you have there. It will be so beautiful when finished though. I am curious what you ended doing for your back splash. I am sure whatever you both decided will be wonderful. Sorry for your Mom and her team. Have a blessed Sunday.

Brian England We have watched the Warriors in the finals the last two years ( with Ron and Alexandra) - and heartily rooted for them.  Unless something big happens for our Blazers, I'm guessing we will be again. Mom says Damian Lillard ( star for the Blazers) has separated ribs and isn't playing his best. Still, the Warriors have been brilliant with their defense.

That is true Lillard is hurt and he is definitely their best player, tough to play with separated ribs.  Sounds like your Mom keeps up with sports, her and I would have an enjoyable time talking sports with each other!

Oh Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD I feel your pain - I really do. We went through a pretty extensive remodel, including the kitchen and it took about 4 months. We had other projects we had planned to re-do but we said WE ARE DONE FOR NOW! Getting your sink back is a big deal!!!!! It will so worth it once it's completed. We still love our newer kitchen to this day and so glad we did it.

Kitchen remodels take patience and a willingness to innovate. Back in my single-family house days, a down-to-the-studs kitchen remodel had us with an electric plate and microwave in the laundry room (with sink.) I think the refrigerator was in the garage. It worked; we didn't starve--in fact, it was rather fun for a limited period.

Lottie Kendall good attitude. I'm sure we will look back on this as a fun adventure, and most of the time it is... :)

Hi Debb and Bernie- I am forever intrigued by your multi-generational living. It makes so much sense. I could see it working with my brother and sis-in-law but we would have to have an arrangement like yours. We are on totally different time schedules (he often gets in from his gig just a few hours before we're waking up!)

Please tell your mom that we stayed up late to root the Blazers on but that didn't seem to do the trick.

Fingers, toes, knees crossed for tomorrow night.

We are too, really. However, if the Warriors win, we'll know we lost to a great team. Wouldn't it be tough to be the Curry parents? Hahaha- love how they each wear a different jersey. Let's hope tonight the Blazers can win one...

Debb and Bernie, a kitchen remodel will definitely test your patience. They always seem to take longer than originally planned. Hang in there, the finished product will be worth it and I can't wait to see it. I hope you enjoyed your takeout!

Oh dear Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I just committed to a Master Bath renovation. What have I done? Too bad money was no object, I would suggest both of us scheduling a long, long vacation and don't come home until it's done.

Good luck! I hope it all goes well. By the way, your mom sounds like a Peach who is spunky and doesn't get rattled by material things. Her heart is for her TEAM and the people she loves! Way to go Debb's Mom!!!
