Oh NO.....Not You Tube....Yicks !

You know the saying...."It's not as easy as it looks."  I remember having a vivid dream as a child that I had driven my Grandfather's car...it was so real...at whatever age that was...I was sure it had happened...Until I was learning to drive...no...must have been a dream.

Watch many sports on TV....how hard can it be to hit a ball with a...Stick, Raquet, Bat, Club....mmmmm harder than it looks !

The Internet and DIY videos have cast that same magical mythical spell over their audience....it's EASY...to ...name that home improvement or repair task...from painting and wallpapering or more likely removing it..to landscaping and laying that brick path or patio...not quite the momentary trandiy projectssformation that appears on the computer.

As a result....when the result...in the "not as easy as it looks" task fails...it can mean far more money, time and effort to repair, replace the attempted project than if a professional had taken on the job in the beginning....and some people only learn that by doing....or rather "UN doing" it.

Sometimes it looks like fun to try something new. Sometimes it is the "way pay someone to....when it looks soooo easy..." Whatever the motivation...there are reasons that professional people get paid more to  do the "easier than it looks" tasks.

You may know or maybe you are a  homeowner who eagerly no diyapproaches these tasks ....and are disappointed when the 10 minute video project turns to hours and days and has to be given to a professional to repair, finish, start over....it can be one big and expensive frustration.

How can you avoid DIY Mistakes ? Ask a trusted and experiened, objective real estate professional ...an agent with experience has no stake in the game...no money paid to them for doing ...re-doing, remodeling, refinishing, etc. Their expexpensive mistakeserience will tell what tasks are best done by professionals and which ones with some education and patience can be taken on by a homeowner not a skilled tradesperson. Taking the time to know what you don't know....is invaluable....and can be a time, money, effort and frustration saver.

If you live in southeastern Wisconsin, Sally K.& David L.Hansonn would be happy to discuss the projects you may want to do in your home..to enjoy the improvements or get it ready to sell.  If you are in need of qualified contractors...we have lists of them. If  there are things you can do yourself...let experience determine which things can be done on your own and which ones require professionals.

This has been an educational home improvement/repair post brought to you with savings and good spirit in mind by Sally K. & David L. Hanson, Broker Associates with EXP Realty, honored to be of service for all things real estate in southeastern Wisconsin.

For a long time I have said that HGTV is the reason for so much homeowner idiocy that I see during inspections.  But they built that deck in only an hour on TV!

P.s.  As regards another of your posts - I logged in today and have the same points number as yesterday and the day before.  Each day it says I received 100 points for logging in.  Well, no.  I stopped following my points or caring about points a long time ago.

I guess my "point" is that if AR is going to have them...get them working properly. For some people it is the difference between paying and not. For me...it was a sanity check...when I comment at different times and think I have commented on someone's post...and the Point o Meter says no...I go back to find it was not my mind...but the broken pointometer.

Good morning Sally. Some can be efficient DIY people, but the majority needs professional help. Knowing the difference may require consultation. Enjoy your day!

Good morning, Sally and David - there are many, if not countless, examples of things that are "easier said than done" around us.  Your take on the subject is quite worthy.

People always think something is easy when they see someone else doing it well, until they try to do it themselves.  In looking at houses yesterday, my buyer was quick to point out fixes that were done by the homeowner that weren't done in a professional manner.

Good morning, Sally... I learned a long time ago that nothing when it comes to DIY is as simple as it looks... youtube video or not!

Hi Sally and David:

Knowing when NOT to DIY is pretty important. Some things are best handled by someone who knows that they are doing. It's worth the money!

I've seen some pretty scary DIY projects at inspections!

Hi Sally and David- I have consulted on several homes that subscribed to the DIY method of home repairs and updates. Some successful...others, not so much. Best thing to do is know your limitations and consult your professional agent.
