Another band that brought a new sound to music during a time when super groups abound, was Genesis. The name Genesis proved to be fitting because just as the band was achieving huge success with the album The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, lead singer and driving force Peter Gabriel left to begin a solo career.

Faced with starting over, the band searched high and low for a dynamic replacement. Eventually, then drummer Phil Collins reluctantly took over as lead singer. Collins turned out to be the right choice as the band continued to gain popularity releasing album after album under the Genesis banner.

Collins also juggled a career as a solo artist, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. Collins was a force to be reckoned with in the 1980s. Between 1982 and 1989, Collins released seven US number-one singles in his solo career. When you combine his work with Genesis, his solo career, and the work with other artists, he had more U.S. Top 40 singles than any other artist during the 1980s. He is one of only three recording artists, along with Paul McCartney and Michael Jackson, who have sold over 100 million records worldwide either as a solo artist or as a principal member of a band.

Genesis music was often featured in the trendy 1980s police drama Miami Vice. For those of you who remember, Phil Collins had a guest starring role as a bad guy named Phil the Shill.

Genesis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2010.

Today’s song is the 1978 Genesis hit "Follow You, Follow Me” from the album …And Then There Were Three..., with Phil Collins providing the lead vocals.
