Yamhill County is one of the oldest Counties in Oregon and was actually established prior to the Oregon Territory being established. It was originally inhabited by the Yamhelas Indian Tribe and was taken over by fur traders and the Native people were force to the Grand Ronde Indian Reservation in 1857.
This was probably due to the rich land that produced lots of fur as well as great for growing food. Today, this area is still used for farming and well known for some of the best wine grapes in the world and many of the top wineries.
