Anne Hill Carter was born in Charles City, Virginia back in 1773 to Charles and Anne. Her family was wealthy and she lived as a Southern Belle. In 1793, she married Henry moving to northern Virginia. Six children were born to this marriage. Due to bad investments Henry was forced to declare bankruptcy in 1809.
Henry was forced to leave his wife and family moving to the Caribbean he attempted to recuperate however he died in 1818 leaving Anne a middle-class widow. She was left to raise the children for the next eleven years before she passed.
So, Anne married Henry “Light Horse Harry” Lee. Her fourth son Robert Edward Lee, Confederate General married Mary Anna Randolph Custis, the great-granddaughter of Martha Washington.
