The Monroe County Commission on Friday agreed to seek state approval on a series of comprehensive plan changes
(PressMethod) – Per an article in the Citizen newspaper-The Monroe County Commission on Friday agreed to seek state approval on a series of comprehensive plan changes designed to give developers incentives to build affordable housing, and to build housing for teachers to keep them from leaving the Florida Keys.
One change would allow developers to build as many as 28 homes per acre on "land deemed not usable for educational purposes," according to a county document to be sent to the Department of Community Affairs, which oversees development in Monroe County.
Another change would allow developers to use gross acreage to calculate the land upon which they plan to build affordable housing. The county now factors the acreage after 20 percent of the land has been taken out of the calculation for setbacks and buffers.
The school district previously estimated it needs 100 new employees a year to replace those who leave the county because of its high cost of living and their inability to purchase homes. Since then, the financially strapped school district has cut more than two dozen positions, and home prices have dropped in the depressed real estate market
