What a Difference a Decade Makes!

The title might remind you of the song, in its many versions and recordings from various artists, and even a slight change in title. You know...day, decade. Nevermind. Just a little fun on a Friday.

#1 – I’m 10 years older – see, I can do math. And I’m wiser (at least I think so). And I have more gray hair, and less of it. So what?! I’m alive and have a great life.

#2 – I’ve now been married 10 more years, and next month makes 40 and we’ll be celebrating in Maui. How cool is that?

#3 – I had no grandkids 10 years ago and neither daughter was married. They are both married now and we have 4 grandkids. Wow! What a life change…especially for them. And both have become homeowners in Los Angeles.

The number 10#4 – 10 years ago I was with RE/MAX Associates, but joined Solutions Real Estate in Carlsbad in January 2011. Sorry, my fellow RE/MAX friends…I don’t miss being with a big company.

#5 – 10 years ago I was the Treasurer for the Southern California Chapter of CRS (Council of Residential Specialists, now the Residential Real Estate Council – RRC), 2 years before serving as President in 2011. I continue to be involved in the organization at the state and national level. We’ll see what 2020 brings.

#6 – We were in our first house in Carlsbad after moving here from Boston in 2005. We are now in our 3rd Carlsbad house (and 10th home overall)! I’m positive we said that first Carlsbad house after leaving Boston was a forever house. What the heck happened!?

#7 – 10 years ago my sister was still alive...so were my uncle, my mother-in-law, and my aunt. 3 of the 4 died in 2011 within 2 months of each from cancer – that was a horrible year!

#8 – We were seeing lots of REOs and short sales. Now, 10 years later they are pretty scant and the market in many areas and price points favors sellers and has for years. We are seeing some shifts in the market, though.

#9 – The average price of a Carlsbad single family detached home in June 2009 was $658,955 (median price was $659,500). As of the May 2019 sales report it was $1,101,505 (median was $1,015,000). That’s a jump, on AVERAGE mind you, of 67%. There were 11% more sales today...not such a big difference.

#10 – I started writing my monthly market reports in July of 2009 beginning with Carlsbad. Back then, we had 408 detached single family homes for sale at the end of July, compared to 211 at the end of May 2019. That's 48% fewer homes on the market today.

Happy Friday! Have a great weekend!

Now you've done it, Jeff Dowler, CRS ... as I'll be thinking of all the changes I've seen and experienced over the last decade today and for the next few I suspect.  As for business, it's staggering to see what this decade has reaped us.  It's staggering and I for one are immensely grateful for the improvements ...

Glad Kathy Streib featured your thoughts ...

Hi Jeff,
This was an interesting read.  Days come and days go. Changes sometimes occur so slowly we don't even notice now much things have changed.

One of the most interesting seminars I went to when I was young was a "futurism" seminar.  One of the exercises was to envision where we would be in 10 years.  That's a little harder than looking back.  I can tell you, huge changes DID take place in those 10 years.

Thanks for stopping by. Yep, the Recession was pretty tough on all of us, and couldn't be ignored. My, how things have changed.

My grandkids, well 2 of them (4 and 18 months) just spent 5 days here and it was such a reminder about how fast the time has gone.

Hi Jerry Wilson

Thanks for stopping by. That's an intriguing thought. I cannot imagine things can keep up at the pace thay have been in the last few years, and we are seeing some shifts and a changing market.

Hi John Henry

Thanks! It was fun to write, and think back, although I can't say I dwell on the past, especially years ago. And so often I can't remember exactly when certain things happened.

The pricing shift HAS been significant, although of course it's all averages. Bet average salaries haven't shifted that much!

Hi Barbara Todaro

Thanks for visiting! Yep, prices really have risen, and I sorta forgotten where they were 10 years ago. The family losses were particularly hard, and all within about 3 months.

Thanks for the kind words - indeed 2011 was a rough one. I was also the President for the SoCal CRS Chapter that year. Defintely an intense time in many ways.

Hi Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

What a nice thing to say. Life has certainly been interesting these past 10 years, and no doubt will continue to be! There were certainly many other things I could have included...helping to move my Mom from PA to Carlsbad, and my daughter, her husband and granddaughter from Oakland to LA and then a year later buying their first house.

Hi Ricardo Mello

I believe they do! There is a contest this month if you are interested.

I sent a letter to my past clients talking about my reflections and got a number of texts and emails about how much they enjoyed it.
