On our visit to the food halls of Galeries Lafayette in Paris, we noticed this sandwich made with black bread. This is not the pumpernickel rye we known as black bread, this bread has charcoal powder as an essential ingredient of the recipe.
On the other side of the aisle we spotted these black baguettes among the ones we are used to eating and buying. This is a food trend that began in Europe in 2018, and as far as I know, it has not made its way here in, among commercial retailers. However, there are recipes on line and Amazon does have charcoal powder to sell.
Here is an excerpt from You Should Be Adding Charcoal to Your Food,
Powdered charcoal is also a cooking ingredient. Yes, that's right: it can actually go in your food—and the results are delightful. Some even say that because of charcoal's ability to absorb organic toxins, it might even make your food better for you (although that's up for debate). However, what is undeniable is that many ERs keep it on hand to deal with poisoning cases.
Our friend Amy who is the baker and owner of Baker's Table in Santa Ynez, knew about this trend and did not agree with these findings. She felt that this was just one of those fads. She also mentioned that our bodies are designed to eliminate toxins and did not need added charcoal to do so.
