I took some time and watched the movie Secretariat last night. While most people of course focus on the amazing victory of the final horse race I was struck by one simple short scene.
There was a quick mention that for years the Lucien Lauring the horse trainer had caried around every newspaper clipping of every horse race lost. I remember thinking why would anyone want to carry around the reminder of their failures. How could he gear himself up for the wins if he was focusing on the defeats. Then as all good stories go, the night before Secretariat was to win the triple crown in 1973, he took those newspaper clippings and placed them in a cup and struck the match. What a powerful uplifting show of encouragement and inspiration.
It dawned on me that we all carry our failures, mis-steps, defeats every day. Our newspaper clippings are ALWAYS there weighing us down, holding us back. We allow them to create our path and we use them as excuses to keep us from striving to greatness. Perhaps we can't change the past but we can certainly change the future.
KW BOLD law "What you focus on expands".
I invite you all to take out Your Newspaper clippings place them in a cup and burn them once and for all. Concentrate on what great triumphs you will enjoy tomorrow and the next day and the one after that. Focus on those goals that have broken free of their chains and watch them expand. You will be amazed out how much farther you can go when you aren't constantly trying to push yourself backwards.
