To Do in Atlanta This Weekend

By

They say nothing’s new under the sun, but what “they” should’ve said is there’s nothing smart about that statement -- because literally every second is a new opportunity to do some new ish. You’re welcome. This event-packed weekend in an event-packed summer happens to begin with the Summer Solstice, and with its arrival comes a brand new brewery called The Lost Druid, a record amount of sand being dropped on Decatur Square for the Decatur Beach Festival, and three chances to drink and eat while you walk around, whether the sun comes out or not. Happy Summer!

Drink new beer

Friday, June 21
Avondale Estates
Today is the grand opening of The Lost Druid, a new brewery with a 20-line taproom and a small-plate-serving kitchen. Be there six minutes before noon -- the official Summer Solstice -- to see the ribbon cutting, then stay for the first pourings of brew and congratulate the crew.
Cost: Free

Stand on the sanded Dec

Friday, June 21
Decatur
This is the weekend downtown Decatur welcomes the Decatur Beach Festival, where 80 tons of that gritty, grainy stuff that makes glass (yes, sand) will be poured onto the streets of Ponce, turning it into a coastal resort town with live music and other performances, food trucks and such, all within walking distance of Taco Mac and Brick Store Pub.
Cost: Free

Ride for the night

Friday, June 21
Midtown
If it requires manual operation and it rolls, you need to bring it to the Atlanta Moon Ride, a 7-mile nighttime group roll-a-thon starting at Piedmont Park. Get there at 7pm to pick up your shirt and wristband, and chill at the pre-party before the 11pm night bike ride begins (VIP tickets include Tito’s Vodka drinks). If you’re already around that part of Midtown, stop by Colony Square at 6pm for their “Groovin’ in the Grove” free weekly live music event.
Cost: $35 until 6pm, $40 at check-in, $95 for VIP

Go Hawaiian with wine

Saturday, June 22
Atlantic Station
Fasten no more than two buttons on that floral rayon beach shirt and get your vibe-sy ass over to District Avenue for the Waikiki Wine Stroll, where you’ll get a free pour just for starting a foot-bourne trek through Atlantic Station, where bars will recognize your wristband and sassy shatterproof wine glass and throw you some free food samples and discounted vino.
Cost: $15-$20

 Live at the Battery Atlanta

Go ballparking with wine

Saturday, June 22
SunTrust Park
Maybe you like your wine without all that Hawaiian influence and prefer fermented grapes in a baseball field. You should hit the Atlanta Wine Walk at Live! At The Battery, where a ticket gets you three hours of wine ingestion and vouchers for four food sample plates. VIP gets you an extra hour, two additional plates of food and complimentary charcuterie.
Cost: $50 for GA, $70 for VIP, $80 for couples

Eat, drink, crawl with tacos

Saturday, June 22
Midtown
Sixteen bars and restaurants, from Zocalo to RReal Tacos, Escorpion and Senor Patron, will be part of the six-hour Taco & Tequila Crawl. Your basic ticket gets you four tacos, a koozie, and drink specials as low as $2 at all participating venues. Go VIP for an extra taco, a T-shirt, and a comped shot of tequila when you check in.
Cost: $25 - $40

Get ur Freak(nik) on

Saturday, June 22
Cellairis Amphitheatre
If any event gets close to recreating the vibe of Atlanta’s legendary Freaknik -- at least musically -- it’ll be Freaknik Fest, which is a concert with Uncle Luke headlining, along with Trina, Ying Yang Twins, Project Pat, Adina Howard, and a super-long lineup of additional acts from Atlanta and all across the South, starting at 1pm.
Cost: $41 - $209

Celebrate Victory

Sunday, June 23
Inman Park
Victory Sandwich Bar is celebrating eight years in the neighborhood where it was born, and is inviting you to have a free George Dickel Tennessee Whiskey slushie, hear three live bands (Pike Co., Chick Wallace, Abby Gogo), and eat BBQ ribs and red beans and rice on the blacktop in front of the restaurant, starting at noon.
Cost: Free
