Interesting!

I remember listening once to Jim Rohn and he was talking about how we respond to things that come into our lives.

We can choose to react or respond. Many times we react, without thinking fully. His suggestion was to be curious about everything and say to yourself that is interesting. Taking this approach allows you to respond.

Often we react with why? How about responding with how?

If we approach things as being interesting, and look at them with curiosity then we approach them differently to most people. I wrote over the weekend about not labeling things that happen good or bad. Much harder to do in practice than just reading about it.

We are programmed how we react to many things that happen. We catch ourselves, uttering a curse or some negative statement below our breath about an event that happens.

But, if we stop and rather than react say, that is interesting, we stop and look at it, we possibly consider things are not necessarily as they seem. We approach them with a how mindset. How are we going to handle this? How are we going to approach this? How are we going to solve this.

Our mental attitude is different, we bring a different energy to the challenge, something more positive, some feeling of hope, some sense we can handle this challenge.

We remain calm, we don't shout, we don't get agitated, we just watch, and consider different options as things move along. Maybe we remain in flow and we achieve our goals rather than allowing ourselves to get distracted and knocked off our path.

So next time something arises, look at it with interest and curiosity and approach it with a how attitude and let me know how that helped.

I continue to work on this and in the meantime if you need a Main Line Realtor who responds rather than reacts, and approaches life with curiosity then give me a call, Nick Vandekar, Selling The Main Line with Long & Foster Real Estate Inc., office 610-225-7400, cell or text 610-203-4543, email Nick@VandekarTeam.com.

A great point you've made, Nick. And there is a huge difference between just reacting as opposed to responding after giving a situation some thought and consideration.

Nick,

It is what we refer to as the "knee jerk" reaction, without realizing that we are doing it.  We continue to catch ourselves on this, thank goodness.  A

Hi Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543, we will save ourselves a lot of heartaches and headaches if we approach situations differently.  Our attitude in our approach certainly makes a great difference.

Hi Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - This is a well-written-thought-out essay. Jim Rohn is my favorite Business Philosopher. When a person practices the art of curiosity they listen harder and learn without reacting.

Many things are going to be thrown at us through our lives and how we react to them will determine which path we end up on.

Hi Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I learned the concept of 'hmmm that's interesting' years ago. And it leads to a basically drama free life by just allowing things to be whatever or however people see them. We're all different - and that in itself is interesting, don' you think!!

Love this Nick. I too can be guilty at times of the knee-jerk response whereas Larry had a much more "let's see" approach. I am always working on this though.

I LOVE this. It can make a huge difference following this advice. I used to be much better at "how" instead of "why"....a nice reminder to get back on the positive side!

Good morning Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 - not to be redundant but that is interesting and a great take away.  Sometimes over reacting can have a devastating effect.

A lot of things one sees everyday assumes it is the same. One day you look at it from a different angle and realize your first perception is not correct.

I need to remind myself to view situations I don't fully appreciate or comprehend, as puzzles. I have a very puzzling client right now, each time we communicate it's like trying to solve a dilimena - it's taking great restraint at times to just listen and absorb. Her husband has some health issues (minor at this time, but it means moving) and she is in panic mode and angry that they have to sell their home.  I'm going to remember your post today when I see her - it will be with interest and curiosity. :)

Hi Nick,
Jim Rohn was one of my favorite self-improvement philosophers.   Trying to see things from another person's point of view isn't always easy but it is worth being open to further thought, study and/ or discussion.  Asking Why is always a great approach.

I recall one of Jim Rohn's tapes in which he said that when something goes wrong, we should stop and think "Isn't that fascinating?" He said it was sometimes difficult to do, such as when he was stuck in freeway traffic on the way to the airport - and would probably be late for his flight.

No - not always easy to do, but always a good goal to aim for.

Hi Nick:

I rather like this perspective! What a great solution to avoid having a knee kerk reaction, especially when it might not be appropriate.
