Hungry Harvest - Ending Food Waste
Every other Friday a box is delivered to my door by Hungry Harvest. And, can I just say it's like Christmas!! I can't wait to open it and see what treasures await me. Each box is different and is based on what is seasonal and what is available that week. My box comes tomorrow and I'm so excited. During the summer each box is packed with a reusable ice pack to help keep your haul fresh.
A few days before I get an email to let me know what I can expect, I have the choice to customize it with extra items. Also, because I'm allergic to strawberries I can put a note in my file that says never send me strawberries, and when strawberries are on the list I am assured they won't be included and the folks at Hungry Harvest will surprise me with another seasonal item.
This weeks box will include the following:
Apples - 1 ct These apples are undersized, meaning stores didn't have a place for them on their shelves. We don't think tiny is a bad thing, and we hope you agree. Perfect for lunches, great with peanut butter, and a crunchy surprise in a salad! |

Apricot - 1 ct This might just be the last call for California-grown apricots. Their season was spectacular but it is coming to an end. Take on their surplus while you can! Some sweet and tastyapricot bars are just what we need to get a taste of summer. |

Baby Golden Potatoes - 1 lb Scarred and too small. Stores didn't want a bunch of undersized potatoes, but we sure do! We love these taters in this recipe for grilled potatoes paired with dijon and herbs. Delish! |
2 |
Eggplant - 1 ct This eggplant was a bumper crop from a farm in Georgia. What does that mean? The grower didn't expect the eggplant to do so well. This puts them in a pickle when they don't have buyers or storage space for their surplus. Try some in this teriyaki buddha bowl! |
2 |
Green Onions, bunch - 1 ct These bunches had some light cosmetic damage from tge heat, so the store rejected all of them - even the pretty ones. We'll gladly take 'em! This scallion recipe is delicious! |
2 |
Kale, bunch - 1 ct California's growing season is at its peak, and it has been a beautiful year for kale crops. We're nabbing the extra bunches! Kale makes a pretty great salad or potato chip replacement. Go even crazier and make these reciple club- recommended kale brownies! |
1 |
Pineapple - 1 ct Tiny pineapples? Fine by us! These were considered too small to even be picked and would have been left behind. Feeling tropical? These are great for juice or chopped up in a fresh fruit salad. |
1 |
Shiitake Mushroom, tray - 1 ct A grower contacted us when they had too many shiitakes and not enough shroom. We have mushroom in our kitchens! About 6 oz per tray. Shittake mushrooms have a smokey, earthy flavor and a meaty texture, Try them in this recipe! |
1 |
Yellow Beefsteak Tomato - 1 ct Guatemala had a very rainy season, and that led to a surplus of tomatoes without a buyer. What are they to do? Call us, of course! These will be oh so delicious in thistomato tart. |
All this for just $26.99 delivered right to my door. I can't wait and sometimes there are little surprises - my last box had 5 Apriums that weren't on the list and they were delicious.
