The Meaning of Home Ownership, An ActiveRain Challenge

ActiveRain Ambassador Debe Maxwell, CRS has issued this June challenge to ActiveRain members:

What does homeownership mean to YOU? The challenge this month is to share just that - easy peasy! Whether you’re a real estate agent, a real estate attorney, stager, inspector or any professional on this forum, homeownership is important to you. Why?

In 300 or more words, share your reason or list of reasons that homeownership is worth celebrating - not only during the month of June but, year-round!

Home ownership has always been a standard element for the quality of life and the feeling of security for me. My parents were home owners during their entire marriage and while I was growing up, the purchase and management of rental properties was a regular daily activity in our home. My family background was the foundation of my motivation to open a real estate office upon my graduation from law school at the University of Virginia. Real estate investments made it possible for me to major in finance as an undergraduate and to complete law school with no debt. My parents were also able to provide one of their rental properties for my first real estate office.

After Dolores and I were married, we purchased our first home in the Green Acres section in Churchland in Portsmouth, Virginia. That purchase was made possible by the completion of a large real estate transaction where the home seller was also the land seller for our sale to a real estate developer for the creation of a new community, Camelot, in Chesapeake, Virginia.

We moved from Portsmouth to the Virgina House on the Virginia Beach waterfront and we lived there eighteen years before our move to Maryland to be closer to family members. We have been in our current home in the Kentlands community in Gaithersburg, Maryland for almost twenty-five years. We love the very walkable community and the convenience to shopping and medical facilities.

Now that we are retired, we are considering other communities but have not yet identified the community that can compare with what we have now. The equity in our home provides a level of financial security in addition to our retirement funds.

The ability to pay for college with real estate investments is HUGE, Roy - not to mention, basically two majors, one quite expensive. Your parents were savvy investors and you followed suit.

Thank you for sharing - love the picture of Dolores too!

When I bought my first home at age 23, I had no thoughts of equity build-up.  I didn't even know the term.  But, as the years progressed, it was easy to see, there was no way that paying rent could compare.

You learned from some very savvy parents who understood the way to invest in real estate was the way to build wealth. Thank you for sharing your story.

Roy Kelley - This was a wonderful contribution to the Home Ownership Challenge! I love that photo of Dolores in her large kitchen. She stands in the center like a true Chef, in her Command Center with vases on Granite of what looks to me like Peonies!

Your parents were very wise and you were too! I thought I was pretty cool selling Avon products in my all-girl High School under the umbrella of a lady down the block because I wasn't 21 years old, but what you did with real estate "investments" making it possible to "major in finance," and to "complete law school with no debt," was really forward thinking for a young man who had dreams and aspirations for your future. My parents were Landlords when I was growing up and real estate or Property Management never entered my mind. I guess I was lured in by make-up, perfumes, and other beauty products in school. Obviously, you were wise beyond years!

Thanks for sharing YOUR homeownership journey!! I hope you find the right community for your next move unless you simply decide to stay where you are since you are clearly very happy there. Love the photo of Chef Dolores doing what she does so well.
