Three Cheers For Luciano Pavarotti

Movie Going

Three Cheers For Luciano Pavarotti  First off, despite the post title this is not a review of the documentary Luciano Pavarotti about the life of the famous singer.

Many may not realize there is a new film about the man that has been released. And that's okay. I think most will know his name.  Away from his typical stage, the movie shares many sides to its subject.  Some I  knew.  Others I did not.  Opera is likely less of a draw than movie-going(especially a documentary) so by tackling a subject that seems to cover a movie/documentary about opera is a bit risky.

I am not an expert.  Definitely not of opera.  And as far as my movie experience is concerned; it's essentially as an armchair observer.  But I do enjoy a good story.  Hearing it.  First-hand.  From others.  And after the fact as Mr. Pavarotti died(hopefully this is not a spoiler alert moment) in 2007 and this Ron Howard-directed documentary is a briskly paced film that includes some new things to me. Some good interviews with him.  With others about him.  His work.  His play.  His passions.  His philanthropy.  And how they blended together.

I did enjoy this movie-going experience far more than I originally imagined.  Enough opera but not so much that it overwhelmed me. Maybe just the right amount.  What more can I say?  If this was a movie review I could go on and on and on. You know kinda like an opera if you're not a full-fledged fan.  For me, I enjoyed the movie.  And that's about it.  Bravo.

Brian England - I would guess that a baseball game would win for viewership compared to an opera for many people.  And for you, I would it give it a very high likelihood.

Aloha Michael Jacobs, for those with a peripheral understanding, Opera and the operatic sound is basically controlled yelling and is an art form hinged on the high dramatization of emotions through music, some of the most difficult and complex music ever produced and often with complex staging, set designs, and synchronized orchestral accompaniment.

In a nut shell most people have no idea as to the difficulty and talent required in Opera and how many artistic disciplines are involved in it's production or it's astounding cost. However, the exceptional talent of Pavarotti made Opera thoroughly accessible and engaging to millions of musical neophytes and seasoned season ticket holders at Opera Houses around the world. There have been many talented Opera performers over the centuries but Pavarotti is/was extraordinary as a man and a talent.

I was eleven when I watched on PBS, Pavarotti perform in Puccini's Turandot at the MET(hearing Pavarotti perform Nessun Dorma for the first time was breathtaking). My life was forever changed after that. I studied Opera in College and almost majored in the subject, went professional for a very brief period. My love of Opera has never ceased nor has my adoration of Pavarotti. I look forward to seeing the documentary and thank you for mentioning it.

Oh, thank you for sharing your thoughts on this one, Michael! I am all about 'real life' and love documentary movies - as you said, just the right amount of opera, peppered into getting to know the real Pavarotti.

Thank you for sharing Kimo Stowell - I so enjoyed your comment - maybe as much as your cookies!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I wouldn't want to mislead anyone to think of the documentary Luciano Pavarotti as a "love" story because it is certainly not a "Hallmark" moment kind of event(you can keep your handkerchiefs for other things should one by required.  But it shows the many passions of the man that is obviously based on his love and appreciation of opera plus a strong affection for many things related to life.

Debe, I agree with your comment abou Kimo Stowell - a particularly good accompaniment to this post.

I can still remember the first time I heard Pavarotti, and where I was at the time.  In was early 1980, and I was in the parking lot of a local swim and tennis club.  A guy drove in with windows down and Pavarotti's amazing voice playing.  I immediately fell in love with that voice.  The world lost what I believe to be the most talented singer, when he left us!

Michael, I remember how sad I was when I heard that the great Italian tenor Pavarotti died.  He was so gifted and talented and left us too soon - 71 years.  Who can forget him sing the aria from the final act of Puccini's opera Turandot.  He put his whole soul into the performances..."Nessun dorma."  Thanks for the heads up, Michael Jacobs.

Myrl Jeffcoat - I can almost imagine the sounds as the music escaped through that car and into the parking lot.  Quite the impromtu concert.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - I hope you enjoy it.  It's a fast-paced documentary in my opinion.

Michael,

Thank you for recommending Pavarotti...we just got back and our niece loved it, and new nothing about opera. On our way home, I talke to Debb or Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD and told her how much we loved it, she and Bernie are going to see it.  I love Bono's statement about his well-lived voice.

We did see a previous to Farewell,  and we may see it.  Again, thank you  A

I'm not an opera or ballet fan but I do appreciate the talent and commitment required to be a star in either. I really enjoy Ron Howard's work and I do enjoy movies of a documentary style...I will check it out.

Sharon Tara - I am definetly not an opera, ballet or classical music fan with an encyclopedic knowledge but I do think Ron Howard did an excellent job with this story as he has shown he is able to do with many films before.

Good evening Michael. I saw Pavorotti once in person in New York City. I won tickets on the radio. While the venue, was too big, he was great. My cousins were just telling me about the film recently.
