Friday Thoughts...Enough With the Weather!

Yesterday I was wandering around Cyberville looking at what will be celebrated in the coming days. I came upon a New Conversations Day, just a thoughtwhich is today, July 12 and my mind did more wandering. (you might blame our Michael Jacobs  who has us pondering and wandering these days.)

Anyway, the gist of the New Conversations Day is that we make an attempt to have a conversation with someone that is more than about the latest restaurant they tried or how hot the weather’s been (unless you’re a meteorologist!)

The point was that we often think we know friends and acquaintances but really don’t really because our conversations remain primarily on the surface.

How many times have we said, after learning something about a friend ...I had no idea!

I thought of a few people I know who Get it when it comes to meaningful conversations. You know them...they don’t just stop at How are you?

They listen to what you say and take it further. They also remember what you’ve said from previous conversations.

Anyway, we’re seeing friends this weekend and I’m going to make an attempt to go beyond the weather or medical ailments discussion.

Personally, I enjoy deeper conversations with people, especially if I want or already consider them to be a friend.  The surface conversations are had with people I would consider to be acquaintances, not friends.  I know that you and I have had phone conversations where we have gone beyond the surface and I consider you to be a friend, even though I have never actually met you.  I know that we will meet one day and both be open to deeper conversations and hopefully become better friends because of them.  Sometimes, deep conversations can lead to not wanting to be friends with that person, but that is rare, haha.

Kathy,
Surface talk has often replaced real conversation. Why? Because so many are walking on eggshells due to political correctness or because they have nothing to say. Or they just like to talk about themselves which turns into a monologue. In business you can get right to what needs to be accomplished. A

I do like deeper conversations with more than a one word answer. Sadly my relationship with my Mom was like that.

Hi Kathy - yes I will join you.  I like to show interest in other people's activities, achievements, and goals.  That creates better connections.

Hi Kathy Streib - I really do work at getting to know people.  I am respectful of clients and try not to dig too deep. I wait for them to "open up" and feel comfortable.

I belong to a movie group and this really helps to open people up. I really have enjoyed learning more about each individual in our group.

Hi Kathy,
I am not a fan of idle chit chat. I've gotten very good at asking questions that take a conversation deeper.  I met with someone new recently. We talked for 2 1/2 hours. I know a lot about him but he knows very little about me.  LOL

Maintaining information seems to get harder and harder for me these days....I do enjoy a good conversation though...even if I don't retain it all. LOL

Kat Palmiotti I think that's why I love smaller gatherings or dinner so you can spend quality time with people.

Barbara Todaro you have to gauge the person you're talking to first, which is why the superficial questions at first are helpful.

Wayne Martin I'm not a moody person but there are times when I'm not that talkative (my husband would wonder when that might be) so I'm happy to listen to someone else.

Donald Urschalitz I'm so happy for you!!! Enjoy your vacation and your family and I wish you good diving and even better fishing.

Brian England your last sentences made me laugh. I remember when we spoke years ago and I love calling you my friend. I do love being able to sit down one on one with someone and just talk.

Ron and Alexandra Seigel you're right about the PC stuff, which I feel is highly overrated.  As we continue to walk on egg shells, we are losing our balance.

Kathy Streib I was going to write a post about walking on eggshells, and I love that you said, we are losing our balance, exactly.  A

I agree about talking about the weather.  The only folks who should be allowed to talk about the weather right now are those folks dwelling in New Orleans!

Morning Kathy.

With Barry being so close you Houston, I would suspect he would be the topic of any conversation you may have, this weekend.

Oh my gosh, I totally hear you on this, Kathy! Like you, I love hearing what others have to say - and asking questions to get even more from them.

This very reason is why I have been seeing my primary care physician for 35 years - he LISTENS and he REMEMBERS! To me, the bottom line is, it means he actually cares - and that's who I want taking care of me when I'm not feeling my best...and when I'm well.

Kathy the weather always seems to be a conversation starter, but it is the meaningful conversations in which we share with each other that truly matter.

Hi Kathy:

I am so with you on this. Having meaningful conversations with those we know, and those we don't is so much more interesting, and time flies when doing so. But it needs to be a dialogue, a conversation, not one sided!

Jeff
