Oconomowoc WI Homes for Sale | Market Report June 2019

Learn more about Oconomowoc WI and why “Life Comes Naturally Here”!

Oconomowoc is a city located in Waukesha County, Wisconsin, U.S. Its name came from Coo-no-mo-wauk, the Potawatomi term for “waterfall.”

Before 1700, this region was inhabited by the Potawatomi. They descended from Woodland Indians known as “mound builders”.

The first white person recorded in the area was Amable Vicau, brother-in-law of Solomon Juneau, one of the founders of Milwaukee.

Oconomowoc was incorporated as a town in 1844. It was not until 1865 that it was incorporated as a city because of the sudden population growth.

And then in the 1870s, Oconomowoc started to become a summer resort spot. At the same time, large houses were established around the town’s lakes, particularly Oconomowoc Lake and Lac La Belle. Wealthy families from the Midwest then flocked to this area in search of homes for sale.

The city has a total area of 12.18 square miles, of which 11.54 square miles is land and 0.64 square miles is water. As of the 2010 census, there were 15,759 people, 6,256 households, and 4,270 families residing in the city.

Selling Homes Changing Lives

Good Morning, Kristin Johnston - REALTOR® - I am so happy to read this post. When I lived in Northern, IL and spent lots of time in southern Wisconsin, I spent many hours at home, in the library, and in Educational College courses learning about the Potawatomi Indians, including Medicinal use by the Native American Indians in Northern, IL. Today, you furthered my education. Thank you!

Also, I never visited or heard of Oconomowoc, WI. Your description sounds beautiful! There are so many opportunities for outdoor fun. I also loved learning that "Coo-no-mo-wauk," is "the Potawatomi term for "waterfall."

I really, really like the home in that photograph! Architecturally, it's magnificent and strikingly beautiful! It's really nice to know homes are available in this area in different price ranges too!

Well done, Kristin! Bests wishes on sales and life adventures!
