Get On The Top Page Of Google Or Die Trying! A SEO Tutorial!

By
Real Estate Agent with Relocating To Baton Rouge & Surrounding Areas

I've spent this morning tweaking someone else's site for them and thought I would share one or two fun secrets involving SEO (search engine optimization).

Let's Have Fun With SEO

Keywords:

1. When you are putting in key words for your site, never do the same word twice. This will make Google very nervous and they will assume you are trying to be a ham like spam. It's okay if you have the 'same' word in a long key word like this- Baton Rouge Real Estate, Louisiana Real Estate. You want to refrain from - Baton Rouge Real Estate, Baton Rouge Real Estate, Baton Rouge Real Estate. Yes, it might seem a little bit obvious but some people might not know this.

2. Every 6-8 weeks, change your keywords. Be sure to add some keywords and also rearrange to order they are in. This will make Daddy Google happy. If you can't think of any new keywords, just rearrange them. This will keep everything fresh as lettuce.

Your Competitor's Keywords

Are you missing a few keywords that maybe your competitor is using? Do you want to know what keywords your competitor is using? Be sure you have good keywords and if you see someone at the top of google, it's okay to do a little cyber stalking. Here are the steps in order to view your competitor's keywords.

1. Right click on the page.
2. Click View Source.
3. Viola! Enjoy the marvelous keywords!

Search Engines Directory

It's very important that your site is included with all the other millions in certain directories. If you haven't added your site to these directories, there's no time like the present.

Yahoo
Windows Live
Alexa
DMOZ

Thanks, Lindsay.  The Librarians Internet Index seems to have stiff criteria for inclusion on their site.  Haven't checked the rest yet :)

Lindsay, on the directory submission, some have charges, and some take a long time to take your URL. That one was not as easy as I thought. All good ideas.

Here are some Keyword Basics questions.

We tell the search engine what the keywords are with the indexing of each page?

The search engine looks at those indexed key words and similar words to match a search query?

The search engines evaluate indexed keywords by comparing to the page content text?

Too many keywords listed with the indexed keywords is spam?

Too many indexed keywords written in the content of the page text is spam?

What about othe significant words on the page, words in bold, words with links, that are not indexed keywords?

Do search engines pick up any words that are not indexed key words?

Lindsay, These are probably too many question for you to answer. But your post at least helped me formulate them.

Thanks for your helpful post.

Lindsay - you said: "Every 6-8 weeks, change your keywords"

Are you really sure that you want to do this with a well-ranking site? I've been doing this kind of work a long time, but I rarely see that as an advisory. Care to share where that one comes from?

Usually, when a site finally ranks well, nobody wants to mess with it.....:)

Just curious. ...dj

Dirk- Actually, I spoke with a consultant at Godaddy.com and he said that it was a good idea to rearrange your key words every 6-8 weeks. Of course, if what you have is working, I see no reason in tweaking it. :)

Hi Lindsay,

I'd again urge caution. I'm not sure that I'd take my SEO advice from a GoDaddy employee. They are a good domain registrar, but they're not really known at all for SEO advice.

Messing with keyword configurations that are not working at all carries little risk. Messing around with keywords configurations (I assume you mean title tags, headlines) means that you are also messing with the correlation between the anchor text of the links that point back to your site, and the keywords on your pages. That anchor text correlation has a huge influence on rankings. When the correlation becomes disconnected it can wreck rankings.

I've seen sites rank at the #1 position for years, in competitive markets, and they never change anything, except get more links. They don't want to upset the applecart.

I have so far put my website on Google and Yahoo. My AR blog (or is it my profile) is on Google. The others will have to wait until I get my strength back from the last two fights.

What do you think about registering individual web pages from my site. I have been thinking about doing that. Google analytics does not show activity except on the home page and its variants (which I evidently cannot consolidate.)

Also, I am wondering about how to set up and use google goals??

Any thougts or suggestions?

See you did not think you were going to take me to raise when you posted this blog, did you?

Richard
