How to Move Your Electronics

By

Moving your belongings can be difficult as there are often lots of fragile or bulky items to transport. One of the things many people forget to consider is how difficult transporting your electronics can be. It is important to pack these items carefully as they are generally fragile and also expensive. Use this guide to make sure you're prepared when it comes to packing and moving electronics.

Remove certain elements

When you're packing up your electronics it's a good idea to remove parts that may cause damage to your belongings while in transit. This includes items such as batteries, DVDs, CDs, toner cartridges, and other printer cartridges. If you leave these items in your electronics might end up damaged or broken.

Batteries can leak or cause your electronic items to overheat so it is vital that these are removed. Ink cartridges can often leak it's important to remove this if you want to avoid spilling ink all over your electronics and your other belongings during transit.

Prepare your computer

We generally store all of our important documents and photos on our computers, so it's very important that these are looked after during transit. Before you pack your computer up make sure you back up all your files onto either the cloud or an external hard drive. This will ensure they stay safe if anything happens to your computer.

If your computer gets stolen it's a good idea to ensure your passwords are complicated and hard to guess. This means even if it is stolen it is unlikely that they will be able to access your information. This will also give you time to get your accounts closed down so that a lot of your information can be removed from the computer remotely.

Label items

Although labelling your belongings during a move is always important, when it comes to cables and other electronics it is easy to get things mixed up if you don't clearly mark everything. Use coloured stickers to help keep all your cables organised. Place a sticker on the end of each cable that connects into the devices so you know which end is which, then put the same coloured sticker next to the cable socket on the device.

For power cords, place a sticker on them and write on it what the cord is used to power. When you remove all the cables and cords, wrap them up carefully and secure them in bags with labels. This will stop them from getting tangled up during transit and will make it easier to sort them out when you arrive.

Keep the manuals handy

Although manuals for electronic devices are usually discarded fairly quickly once the devices are set up, it's a good idea to keep them handy in case you decide to move. When you move you will have to reconnect and potentially set up a lot of your devices again. If you've thrown out all your manuals this could be quite difficult.

If you no longer have all the manuals look them up online and download them so you have access to them when it comes time to reconnect everything. You can usually find these manuals on the manufacturer's website. This will make setting up your devices again much easier.
