Enjoy Your Summer!
Of course North Dakota is not covered with snow 9 months of the year but it often seems that way to me. When Spring gives way to Summer the hardest thing to do is to balance chores with pleasure (have you noticed that I blog a lot less in our 3 months of summer?). In honor of those 3 months (June - July - August) here are 3 of my favorite things about Summer.
While we do seem to manage to grill about 6 months of the year grilling and picnics rate highly among my summer pleasures. The picture below was taken this July at a friends home who hosted a picnic for Minot Toastmasters Club 636. We all had a really great time until a swarm of wasps attacked my son Timmothy (5 stings in a matter of seconds). Why they picked him out of the crowd is unknown. He was right in the middle of us, a group of about a dozen people.
Camping has always been one of my favorite summer activities but regretfully it's one of those things I don't actually get around to nearly often enough. If I'm lucky I will get out there twice a year. We usually camp at the East Totten Trail Campground which is a State run site. We usually opt for the "primitive" site and then bring a little generator to support our tiny camper, a 1970's Scamp.
For the most part "Gardening" ranks up there in my fun summer activities. If we could eliminate the insects and weeding it would be at the top of my list. I love tilling in the Spring, the smell of fresh dirt is a good smell. (BTW is fresh dirt an oxymoron?) It's fun to pick the seeds out at the store and start envisioning the fruit those seeds will bring. In many cases I will start the seeds in my little greenhouse and in other cases I will plant them right in the garden (usually after I've found some way to kill my greenhouse plants). Then there is the bitter/sweet joy of harvest. A joy to eat the fruits of my labor and to share it with others and the bitter realization that summer is quickly coming to a close.
This post is in responce to the challenge put forth by Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886 and her Summer Fun Contest - Show off your town! While this isn't exactly showing off my town it is showing off our area and some of the summer fun we enjoy up on the North Coast of the USA.
