2019-2029 - A Decade in the Making
Hmm…this challenge was proposed by Jeff Dowler, CRS over a month ago - I loved it and have had it on my mind ever-since! Funny thing but, every day I wonder what I could possibly add to the list of what I think the next decade will bring.
Ponder this…
In the years just prior to the recession, our business was filled with visions of ‘sugar plums’ from every Tom, Dick & Harry who thought starting their own real estate firm was the ticket to financial freedom. Shortly after the recession, we began seeing these 1-hit-wonders fall off of the radar and then, eventually, 90+% of them, out of business.
With the uptick in the market and everyone and their brother (and sister!) feeling that this is the easiest career in the world to make a killing, financially, we began to see new and different business models appear on the horizon. About a year ago, the market began to soften a wee bit and we are already seeing some of these 1-hit-wonders falling to the wayside once again.
Will there be robots showing homes routinely in the next decade? No, I don’t think so but, I do think that more first-time homebuyers will take a less conventional route when buying their home. They may choose to try the ‘discount’ more frequently than they are in 2019. Their success with this style of home shopping & buying is yet to be seen.
AI is also another ‘new’ method of determining those who don’t know that they are going to raise their hand in the next year (to buy a home) but, we will be ‘on top of our game,’ remaining front and center for those not in-the-know! AI technology will become more responsive and more on-target than we are seeing in 2019.
One thing that I do know - computers will never replace those of us who provide the style of customer service our sphere is accustomed to. Yes, we may utilize technology a bit more in our business and I believe Closings in an attorney’s office will be reserved for the rare home buyer & seller by the end of 2029. That will take away one of my favorite parts of the transaction but, I will say that it will be more convenient for our buyers & sellers and I’m all for anything that improves their home-buying or selling experience.
Personally and in my ‘non-real estate life, I have no idea what the next decade will bring but, one thing that I pray for each and every year is a cure for spinal cord injury. I believe that at some point, SOMEONE will be able to convey to BOTH side of the political isle, that stem cell research can be done using placentas from live births - it has absolutely nothing to do with pro-life or pro-choice. It's a politicized issue that does not belong in the government realm in any way, shape or form.
Of course with Alzheimer’s in my family and losing friends to cancer diagnoses, I would love to see a cure for both of those diseases during the next decade, if not sooner.
Lastly, I do believe that we will see more automobiles 🚙 being self-driven and I wonder if that is something that will appeal to the masses. Will this become standard like AM/FM radio on cars?! 🚘
