2019-2029 - A Decade in the Making

Hmm…this challenge was proposed by Jeff Dowler, CRS over a month ago - I loved it and have had it on my mind ever-since! Funny thing but, every day I wonder what I could possibly add to the list of what I think the next decade will bring.

Ponder this…

In the years just prior to the recession, our business was filled with visions of ‘sugar plums’ from every Tom, Dick & Harry who thought starting their own real estate firm was the ticket to financial freedom. Shortly after the recession, we began seeing these 1-hit-wonders fall off of the radar and then, eventually, 90+% of them, out of business.

Financial Freedom Dreams

With the uptick in the market and everyone and their brother (and sister!) feeling that this is the easiest career in the world to make a killing, financially, we began to see new and different business models appear on the horizon. About a year ago, the market began to soften a wee bit and we are already seeing some of these 1-hit-wonders falling to the wayside once again.

One-hit wonders

Will there be robots showing homes routinely in the next decade? No, I don’t think so but, I do think that more first-time homebuyers will take a less conventional route when buying their home. They may choose to try the ‘discount’ more frequently than they are in 2019. Their success with this style of home shopping & buying is yet to be seen.

AI is also another ‘new’ method of determining those who don’t know that they are going to raise their hand in the next year (to buy a home) but, we will be ‘on top of our game,’ remaining front and center for those not in-the-know! AI technology will become more responsive and more on-target than we are seeing in 2019.

Robot AI Changing Times

One thing that I do know - computers will never replace those of us who provide the style of customer service our sphere is accustomed to. Yes, we may utilize technology a bit more in our business and I believe Closings in an attorney’s office will be reserved for the rare home buyer & seller by the end of 2029. That will take away one of my favorite parts of the transaction but, I will say that it will be more convenient for our buyers & sellers and I’m all for anything that improves their home-buying or selling experience.

DNA - Help find a curePersonally and in my ‘non-real estate life, I have no idea what the next decade will bring but, one thing that I pray for each and every year is a cure for spinal cord injury. I believe that at some point, SOMEONE will be able to convey to BOTH side of the political isle, that stem cell research can be done using placentas from live births - it has absolutely nothing to do with pro-life or pro-choice. It's a politicized issue that does not belong in the government realm in any way, shape or form.

Of course with Alzheimer’s in my family and losing friends to cancer diagnoses, I would love to see a cure for both of those diseases during the next decade, if not sooner.

Lastly, I do believe that we will see more automobiles 🚙 being self-driven and I wonder if that is something that will appeal to the masses. Will this become standard like AM/FM radio on cars?! 🚘

Debe some things will ALWAYS require the human tough, and in my opinion the Real Estate Industry is one of those things.

Somehow I knew we would be in agreement, Jeff Dowler, CRS! The bottom line - there is no substitute for human contact, human caring and customer service from a...HUMAN!

I can't IMAGINE they haven't been able to find one - I know the pharmaceuticals hope they don't but, that's beside the point of doing what's right for the human race - whether they are smokers or not, James Dray

I'm so shocked that the advances we have made in medicine over the last FIFTY years has not included all 3. Isn't it astonishing what we CAN do though? It just seems like it would be so darned 'simple' as it's a simple cell that doesn't act like the others!

As for neurons regenerating - I've never understood why that's impossible. It's one of those medical things that has baffled me for years - beyond my years being married to a quadriplegic too, Kat Palmiotti!

I can't see how we can be replaced, Barbara Todaro!

Leaving Denver yesterday, I was struggling with the computer reading my pre-boarding pass in order to get my bag tag. A HUMAN came over and got it done right away. Of course, that led to a conversation about humans being replaced...or NEVER being replaced.

I told her what I did for a living and asked if she owned her home. She said she did and I asked if she could imagine being shown the homes that she toured with a robot instead of a human. She said, "I think I would have just stayed a renter...the rest of my life. I want someone to hold my hand!"

I haven't been bothered by anyting to do with AI yet but, I will say that there is absolutely no substitute for human - voice, touch and contact. Period.

If I'm phoning a company who has an automated system, I just keep repeating, "operator" until they put me through to a human! I refuse to utliize their robotic systems, Ron and Alexandra Seigel

Ah yes, Michael Jacobs - purely pontification - nothing 'talking heads' from me - I truly have NO clue what will happen in the next 10 years). I do know that if I am reading this post in 10 years (to see if any of it does come true, I'll be incredibly thankful (to be on this side of the earth)! LOL

I just can't imagine that we'll allow that to happen, Brian England - and one sure-fired way of doing that is by continuing to demonstrate our value to the consumer!

Well, I'm glad you liked it, Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886! Yes, I don't see (at least in our lifetime) humans being replaced. If it happens, we haven't done our job, proving our value to our clients. I think we both have a strong enough following that we'll never had to worry about that - thank goodness!

I completely agree, George Souto! Computers & robots are only as good as their data input and you simply cannot input human compassion, feelings, empathy, touch...

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I like how you crafted your vision into the future. We can't ignore the digital age but humans are essential. Social interest has changed the way people live and do business and many things continue to change. As our culture changes, there is a lot of uncertainty, and I have noticed how vilification springs out of fear. When people attempt to dehumanize others with negativity it becomes very toxic in the public eye. I always have to take a step back and remind myself, there are two sides to every story and reasons I can't understand.

The remarkable thing is there are many wonderful people in this world and we should never lose sight of those who are doing good. I do believe in angels on earth, especially nurses and doctors who strive to tell the truth and heal using skills that go beyond average man and woman.

I know I'm not alone in sharing your passion for miracles and cures for Alzheimer's and cancer. I shall keep you and Ray in my prayers.

Nice summary of my thoughts, Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP because you know I agree 100% with you!

I don't understand why there is so much 'fighting' going on and it's just downright underhanded - you do have to step away from it and sometimes you'll just never figure it out either. For me, it's not worth spending time on - life is too short and, as you said, absoultely FILLED with wonderful people!

As for the cures - surely ONE of those 3 can happen in this next decade! Oh, how I would love to have the skills to focus on that. I would live in a tent and work tirelessly until I had that cure figured out. SO many people are devastated by each of those diagnoses each and every year.

Happy Thursday!

Debe- I share your prayers. Years ago, Larry and I were fortunate to tour the Miami Project to Cure Paralysis through one of the companies he worked for. We were amazed at the work being done. Let's hope that spinal cord injuries, Alzheimer's, and cancer will soon find cures.

We know that much of the best medical science has to offer is yet to come and the future of stem cells...as often seen in other countries first is what so many people will find as a life changing benefit.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - Hold on to your dreams, especially in the medical field and never, ever give up. A quitter never wins and a winner never quits - I have no idea who said that, but I read in in 3rd grade, recited it and never forgot it.
