August 19 has been celebrated annually as National Aviation Day since 1939. Today marks the 80th Annual Celebration of National Aviation Day. President Franklin D. Roosevelt made a presidential proclamation to celebrate National Aviation Day on August 19. That date was chosen as it is the birth date of civil aviation pioneer Orville Wright.
With his brother Wilbur Wright, Orville Wright created and "flew" what's considered the first aircraft.
NASA states that National Aviation Day is the "biggest day in flight" each year. As part of the celebration, NASA offers a free downloadable e-book "High Flyers Alphabet Activity Book " designed for children in grades K-2.
Local libraries have additional free, downloadable aeronautics e-books from NASA. Use this NASA e-books link for free downloads, check the library's electronic resources or ask a librarian for assistance to find and download them.
