Kale's obit

Who Killed Kale?

Every obituary is a loss or even a tragedy. It was sad to read about Kale Schaan on July 24th, 2019 in the Minot Daily’s obituary section. Kale was a very promising and talented young man.  My hats off to the family for openly calling attention to the fact that Kale’s demise was due to a struggle with addiction.

Who killed Kale? Some may say he did it to himself as an addict and there is some truth to that but it’s not the whole truth... so help me God.

I say the answer also lies in the pages of the Minot Daily News.

Nearly every day the Minot Daily News publishes the “Crime Beat” and almost every day there are two or more people arrested for selling heroin and/or meth. These people killed Kale! Each and every one of them! Every seller of these drugs are killers whether they supplied the drugs involved in the overdose or not they feed peoples addiction and it never turns out good. It’s not that Kale got a bad dose of the drug... it’s that someone working to make a profit or in an effort to support their own habit sold it to him, that’s who killed Kale.

It doesn’t stop there and again the answer can be found in the Minot Daily News in the court reports. Look at the sentences pushers get today. Unless they directly killed someone like Kale’s pusher did, chances are they will be sentenced to time served and probation. I and many others wish Kale would have received probation but some unknow person gave Kale a death sentence... and profited from it.

I’m going to add law makers to the list of people responsible for Kale’s death. Those law makers who look at the bottom line and decide we can’t afford to build bigger prisons to hold the killers who sell the drugs. A prison sentence isn’t always a cure but it does take one more pusher off the street. That one pusher may have been the one who killed Kale... or next time your son or daughter.

There are definitely too many issues going on in the world that are affecting young people in a negative way these days.

I agree Brian England and I believe a good part of the problem is that we have taken faith out of the schools. Who are our children to turn to in times of trouble.. drugs, Uncle Sam... ?

Hello Bob - there is likely more to Kale's story(and far too many like his)to truly understand this plight of epidemic proportions.

I agree Michael Jacobs but the end of the story is crystal clear... someone sold him illegal drugs that killed him.

Bob,

The whole opioids is everyone's responsibility.  These are so addictive that one looses their minds at every age, even old people are committing roberries to feed their addiction to these so called legal drugs.  When I was managing two medical practices, oxycontin  prescription was a triple reporting drug (state, fed, and pharmacists.    It was known as an addictive drug...and somehow this was forgotten...A

You are right Ron and Alexandra Seigel , it is everyone's responsibility. The public should not be silent.

Bob- when we were living in Delray Beach the opioid epidemic was even taking its toll on the first responders who took their patients to the ER only to have them back in the hospital again in days. We have to stop the source and stop the need.

Bob "RealMan" Timm I don't disagree with you entirely - society does need justice as a part of its structure, and I can names pages worth of criminals who I think didn't see enough justice done. But I'd like to take an additional approach - many many many addicts are self-medicating because of undiagnosed physiological issues like ADD and PTSD. If we would in fact stop putting mentally-challenged people in jail at monstrously disproproportionate rates to mentally-unchallenged people and would instead start introducing mandatory treatment "sentences" for them, we'd see a marvelous drop in recidivism. Equally critical, start mandatory screening of school-age children (although I'm not expert enough to know what's a good age to test) of all kids for ADD, dyslexia and a few other early-onset issues, treat them, and they don't develop addictions in the first place. Significantly more humane, far less costly, and society nurtures productive members of the community.

Agreed Kathy Streib . Furthermore I think the makers of these drugs need to forfit a great share of thier profits (from these specific drugs) to help the people they have help hook on the drugs.

I would agree in whole Lauren Williams, CPO  except the addicts I know have all been very healthy (mentally) people that started using drugs more out of boredom and just plain old recreation. Some have been very close to me and I know there was no outside influnce in any one of them.

Bob "RealMan" Timm I'm not sure what an outside influence would be - ADD, bipolar disorder, anxiety disorders are all internal, and often undiagnosed for decades, if at all.  "In a study of adolescents who were being treated for issues surrounding substance abuse, almost three-fourths reported a childhood trauma, the National Child Traumatic Stress Network (NCTSN) reports" - 2008 study, just one example.

But yes, an addict in treatment, whether it's for alcohol, opiods, whatever, has to take personal responsibility for managing his/her illness and treatment, just as a diabetic does, a cancer patient. I'm not trying to absolve anyone of their involvement in their health. But absolutely trying to frame it as a health issue, rather than a punitive framework which is obsolete. "Just plain old boredom" is in fact often symptomatic of ADD, just as a counterpoint.

Morning Bob.

The age old question, some blame the lawmakers and some the way people look at an issue.  Until society and the lawmakers are on the same page it will continue

Bob,

I know this is an older post however I just came across it.  I got goosebumps reading it because I lost a nephew at a similar age due to the same thing.  He got clean for months and then the past came back to get him in the form of the old dealer.  It is outrageous and maddening!  It is hard to prove and procecute when the witness is dead.
