Having Pets is Hard
This post is a tribute to Wayne and Jean Marie Zuhl parents of chickens. They started out with a few chicks that were supposed to be their son's responsibility. As happens in many families, children soon lose interest and if that child has a GREAT mom, like Jean Marie, she will assume the responsibilities for their pets.
Every pet deserves to be loved and taken care of, even chickens. They can be joyful, fast-paced, chirpers (or peepers), and they can give back to their family by giving fresh eggs. Over the years, I have read so many heartbreaking stories by members of ActiveRain who have lost dogs and cats. But this is the first I've heard about a beloved pet chicken named Einstein.
This is a heartwarming story, filled with wit, affection, and humor. You gotta love the photo of Jean with her pet dog on the pillow. I am in hopes Jean's story will be featured and others will pay tribute. Comments to me are disabled. Please go directly to Wayne and Jean's post and let them know how special Jean Marie is. After all, having pets IS hard!
We buried Einstein today.
You might remember that Einstein is one of the 6 chickens we adopted a few years ago. Our son, then 19, really really really really wanted chickens and surprised us (!!!) one fine Saturday with 6 fuzzy day-old chicks.
That was the last time he thought they were interesting, unfortunately, and 99% of the care fell on Jean. Who LOVED it. Chickens are the most pleasant of all pets. They follow me around, require very little in terms of effort, and provide free breakfast for a few years.
They also don't hog the pillows (ahem, looking at you, Peanut).
Last fall, Henny Penny died very unexpectedly. She's buried under a large rock in our hostas on the side of the yard. A few months later, TRex died. She's about 12 inches away from Henny Penny.
This morning, Einstein joined her sisters in the hosta garden.
