Ask An Ambassador: Connections

Like many things in Life, ActiveRain is what you make it.

You can use it as a dumping station for marketing reports and never comment or engage with anyone.

If blogging isn't for you, you can still come here, read, comment and get to know people.

Or you can be a regular blogger, connecting with potential buyers and sellers and agents from coast to coast (and beyond).

Over time, you'll figure out who a lot about people and their passions, how well they know their market, their business philosophy and a whole lot more.

Some you may get to meet in person and every time I have, it's never felt like I was meeting a stranger.

And people come and go from the Rain, and some come and go and come and go and come and go.....the Rain continues on regardless.

Many folks I know haven't blogged here in years and probably never will again.  The contact shifted from the Rain to Facebook so we're still in touch.

The cool thing about maintaining those relationships is the ability to help each other out.  One Rainer is very active in her garden club and has used several of my flower pictures for garden club newsletters and other garden club business.  I'm happy to provide.

Another Rainer who hasn't blogged here in 6 years reached out this week to ask to use some of my bee pictures to decorate here bee/she-shed :)  I've got plenty, so a Dropbox upload and link later and she's set!

I'm not a believer in the "you can't have a REAL friend unless you've met in REAL life" saying.  There are many people here that I've never met in real life, most likely never will, but count amongst my friends.  Phone calls, emails, Facebook chats, texts, the communication lines are there and open.

I'll readily admit, I don't participate in the social aspect of the Rain nearly as much as I used to.  My only mandatory is blogging daily.  I may or may not read another post, or leave comments, or visit the Q&A section.  It all depends on my time availability.  But even with that "neglect", I know the connections are out there if they need me, or I need them.

I'm connected.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help!

Hi Bill(and Liz too)  - This is a favorite topic of mine. It's one that is in motion in sometimes weird and mysterious ways.  And in so many different varieties.  You summed it up well.

I've used those connections to make new connections when needed, in particular when I need to place a referral and I don't have a direct contact.  Usually someone I do know in the general area can point me to someone good directly where I need help.

Hi Bill - You hit the nail on the head for me with this one. Sharon Tara and I finally got to meet a few years ago after years of friendship on ActiveRain. It is a moment I will never forget, and yes it was as if we'd been friends forever.

I've lost count of the number I've met in person, but rarely has it felt like meeting a stranger.

Bliz I"ve always considered you a friend! And I"ve met so many rainers in person, hundreds really over the last 10 years. Some of us meet quite often for happy hour or whatever here in town. And when we travel it's fun to meet other online  rainer friends. Like you said, when I meet them in person it's like we had coffee together 2 days ago! They are who they say they are  - great people!

There's a surprisingly low number of agents active in my area, so no meetups unless I head out of town.  Always fun when I do though!

Hi Bliz, You guys have always been a mentor and wonderful friend in the Rain and on FB. Although, I don't post as often as I used too, I still check in to see how my AR friends are doing and sometimes I get to leave comments. I do value all the friendships that I have made here over the years since joining AR back in 2011.

You are absolutely right. It's certainly possible to be friends with people you haven't (yet) met in person.

I know there are people in this community that I've never met, but have called when I needed help.  I think that fits the definition of "friends".

More than once over the years I've met someone who was also on this site.  After all of a few seconds you would've thought we have know each other for years

We start with a lot of shared history, so meeting in person is just confirmation of who we already know.
