This major do-it-yourself project requires careful preparation and execution and a fair amount of time to protect your valuable floor. Here’s a summary:
- Type of wood floor: DIY refinishing of solid 3/4-inch hardwood is OK, but don’t attempt DIY refinishing of layered engineered wood—leave this to the pros.
- Prepare your room: Refinishing usually means sanding the floor, so you’ll need to remove curtains, furniture, doors, and other items that may need protecting or will be in the way. Use plastic and tape to cover vents, lights, windows, etc.
- Use a random orbital sander: You can rent one at a home center. Follow the instructions, using the recommended sandpaper grit for the first sanding. Follow the grain of the wood. After you’ve done the room, use a power hand sander to do the edges and a pointed detail sander to do the corners. After sanding, vacuum with an attachment.
- Fill in holes and gouges with matching wood filler.
- Do the second and third sandings with the recommended papers. Again, vacuum and damp-mop the floor between sandings. If the floor still feels a bit rough, you can use a buffing screen to smooth out fine scratches. Again, vacuum and mop. Wipe the floor down with mineral spirits.
- Finish! Staining is only needed if you want to change the floor color. If you’re not staining, apply a sanding sealer and lightly sand with a 320-grit sandpaper. Vacuum and clean, then wipe down the floor with a tack cloth to remove all dust. Apply the polyurethane finish according to directions.
