Colorful Curb Appeal; Painting with Plants:

In Hawaii we are blessed with incredible tropical flora, some of it indigenous much of it imported. To really add some zing to your curb appeal I have assembled some of my favorites.

Ti plants (Cordyline terminalis)3'-6' are indigenous to Hawaii and are found through out Polynesia and tropical climes worldwide. Ti's come in a great number of shapes, colors, and textures. Here are just some of the many varieties available.

Ti plants are sacred to the Hawaiian's and are used in many ways in addition to landscaping. Foods such a Lau Lau and Kalua Pig are wrapped in Ti leaves and cooked in Imu's (traditional Hawaiian oven's dug in the ground), They are also used as hula skirts, in religious ceremonies and as offertory wrappings.

Lauae Fern (Microsorium Scolopendria Plypodium) 3' to 4' is another indigenous plant that has great cultural significance, as well as, adding wonderful texture to the landscaping. Lauae is best known as an Hawaiian homeopathic remedy for high blood pressure.

Oyster Plants (Tradescantia spathacea) 4"-6" also known as Moses in a Basket and BoatLilly make a wonderful boarder and have an excellent spikey texture and bright green purple leaves.

Did I say gorgeous, since this afternoon, I have my photoframe in the office, desktop on the computer and photographs of all my Hawaii vacation flowers and scenery, ocean, etc.  AHHHH like a breath of fresh air and just like being there, well not really, but close.  Thanks again for this post.

Kimo ~ Beautiful plants; I also like to use plantings here (in my own landscape) that don't always rely on flowers for color.  I could have a ball putting combinations of those you've shown together!

HI Kimo-beautiful post! Mahalo!!!  I love the detailed photo of the lauae leaf.  I have a gorgeous white orchid on my desk from my son and daughter-in law.  It was one of my Mother's Day gifts.  I am amazed how gorgeous the blooms still are-it reminds me our your lovely island and our favorite family vacation destination.

I love the Lauae Fern, I wonder if it would grow here in Houston.  I always bring plants back from Hawaii, the only one that makes it is the Plumeria.

Kimo, keep the gorgeous photos coming! I love learning the names of plants. My favorite is the Oyster plant, and makes me wonder how it got it's name? Does it grow in clusters?  Thanks for the reminder that somewhere the sun is shining and its warm, unlike here on the Kitsap Peninsula!

Aloha Kimo,

Nice looking plants. I had a feeling you would have Ti plants in this post. They are great for color. How much water do Ti's require?

Great Hawaiian plants - we have some in Minnesota that have similar colors and shapes.  I love the lime green jolts in potted plants along with  purple, orange, and  fuchia flowers of some time.

Bookmarked. Beatiful pictures. Please don't hestitate to post more. If you ever happen to go to The Singapore National Botanical Garden (in singapore naturally), and wonder in the Orchid Conservatory (paid tour), then you will see a magnificent display of all of these types of plants.  The many species of cordylines and ti's really make for some colorful landscaping in Hawaii YEARROUND!
