Active Rain Will Get You There But You Need To Know How To Drive

By
Real Estate Agent with The Gasset Group & Get It Done For Me Virtual Services 13253167-SA00

We get emails almost daily with SEO questions from Active Rain Members. I try to get back to all of you but sometimes there are just too many questions in a week to answer them individually.

We are going to address one of those emails in this post because this question is a very common one. I will point out some changes that can be made and I would like you to comment with suggestions to help Vickie McCartney with her question.

This is a copy of Vickie's email. She gave me her permission to post her email:

Vickie McCartney Owensboro Kentucky Real Estate

Well, that all depends on what keywords she is using. The first question that I would ask is,

Has Vickie done her keyword research or is she just guessing at the keywords? You should always do your keyword research first before you choose your keywords.

Now when I do a keyword search for the keywords, 'Owensboro Kentucky real estate' there are only 31 searches a month for those words and there are over 3,100 websites just on Google with those words being used as keywords. Not a very promising income generator!

I asked Vickie what search words she was checking to see where she placed on google with and she was checking on these terms, ' Owensboro,KY real estate or Homes for sale in Owensboro,KY. But what good are these search terms if not enough people are searching for them? You still would need to own these keywords but they should be spelled without the comma in between the words. Google bots see the comma as seperating key words.

Now when I search for the keywords here is what comes up:

Vickie McCartney Owensboro Kentucky Real Estate

The next thing that I notice is that Vickie has only written 80 posts. That sounds like a lot but it is not. Google probably does not see her as relevant enough to top the competition. Upon further research on her blog posts I noticed right away that she is all over the place with her blogging. It looks like there is no plan. You must have a plan. Out of those 80 posts there are a lot of posts written for AR members and remember those are good to gain a readership but they must be on top of your 3 to 5 you write each week for your keywords.

  • You must be writing at least 3 to 5 posts with your keywords per week. So if you are writing members only posts, those don't count!
  • Your blogging needs to be consistant.
  • You need to practice good SEO skills such as internal linking and attracting inbound links.
  • Making sure your titles have your keywords is a must and so is anchor text.

With patience, a good strategic blogging plan like the one I have implemented with Fred Carver and with Debe Maxwell will get you right on top of Google, get your phone to ring and increase your income.

Hi Katerina - I have looked over Vickies blog and the 1st thing that jumps out at me is the improper use of anchor text. "Click here" with a link to a website will do nothing for you, as you know. She also has just typed her web address with no anchor text in a number of places as well.

It's all about keywords...tags...search words...consistancy...keep writing over and over agin about the areas your looking to pick up the consumers interest. You really have to experiment to see what's working. You would be surprised at some of the words they search with.

The title is a big area with keywords...usually they want to gather interest in the first paragraph or the first few lines of your post.

Great post Katerina.  Certainly not too overwhelming for someone to read and digest:-)  Neal's point, "...keep writing over and over again about the ares your looking to pick up the consumers interest" is a good point.

3-5 times a week may seem daunting until you think of all the things you do in your workweek as a real estate professional that you could share with the public and help them out with.

I think designing series helps to keep a blog calendar focused, regular pieces that you run weekly and monthly.  Also getting out and just talking to local business owners and such has helped spark some post ideas for me, as well as the conversations when you get into commenting and social networking.

Great advice!  I try to direct most of my posts toward the consumers I want to work with but I am NOT doing a good enough job of consistently sitting down to write them.  I'll do better!

Katerina, I don't know how you do it all, must be the help you get from Number 1 Assistant !  Having lived in Ky and still visit there, I can imagine Owensboro would not be the most tech savy place to work into. But, if she keeps it up with the right key words and plan, she should be able to dominate that area. Great advice, as always !

Missy- You are right, we do not live in a tech savy place either. But we dominate. And there is only other blogger in our whole town, who does not blog on AR. She can dominate by the less searched keywords and then on more competive ones. She needs to write more localism posts. My number 1 assistant is the love of my life, along with Nestor of course.:)
