Maria Dalle was born just outside Bologna, Italy back in 1778 to a peasant family. She was raised and educated by one of her uncles (his name is lost to history). She studied medicine at the University of Bologna. In 1800, she published three scientific papers, on anatomy, physiology and midwifery.
In 1832, she became Director of the Department of Midwifery at the University of Bologna. She died in 1842, she was 54.
What you may not know about Maria Dalle Donne is that she was the first female doctor in Italy and the second woman to become a member of the Ordine dei Benedettini Accademici Pensionati (Order of Retired Academic Benedictines). I know this one is short but that’s all the information I could find about her.
