Charlotte's 2019 Yiasou Greek Festival: September 5-8

Even though the Labor Day weekend festivities have barely begun, you can continue the fun at next weekend's Charlotte Yiasou Greek Festival -- one of the Queen City's favorite annual events. This will be the 42nd year Charlotte will enjoy "all things Greek."

Charlotte's Yiasou Greek Festival is one of the city's biggest and most popular cultural festivals and has won many awards and accolades over the years, including, "Best Ethnic Festival," "Reader's Choice Best Annual Festival," Charlotte Magazine's "Best International Festival," "Best of the City Festival," "Best of the Best/Best Cultural Festival," and more. Is it any wonder that some 50,000+ Charlotteans attend each year? This hugely popular festival began in 1970 as a simple church fundraiser. 8 years later, the Yiasou Festival expanded to a 3-day format and was attracting some 3,000 visitors. Today with some 50,000 expected visitors, virtually every member of Charlotte’s Greek community — across every generation — plays some role at the Yiasou Greek Festival,

Hi Nina, the Greek Festival sounds like a grand time for all. I hope the impending hurricane is done and gone by then.

Nina,

We both enjoy Greek food, and Santa Barbara also has a Greek Festival, which we have not attended yet...A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... I have to admit that when it comes to Greek food, I'm not a fan! When we lived overseas and needed to visit Greek friends, I always considered it punishment for my sins!

NINA!!!!  Try some of the delicacies.  Nothing beats Yemista for example, which is ground beef or lamb and rice stuffed into tomato or green peppers and baked with tomato sauce.  It literally means: stuffed.  Or, go for some Greek lasagna, commonly called Mousaka.   Dip those similarly stuffed grape leaves into Tzaziki!!  And finish with baklava of course with some coffee.  Don't forget fresh fruit for dessert!  Nina Hollander

Dave Rosenmarkle thanks, Dave. We are not anticipating any major weather-related issues... we are too far inland to be hit by Dorian.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® hi Sheri... Charlotte has a large population of Greek heritate... anywhere you have Greek people, you'll probably find a festival.

Nina,

I am wondering what you were served that you considered punishment for your sins.  Was it the chicken garlic soup with lemon?  Or baklava?  A

Ron and Alexandra Seigel hi Alexandra... many, many, many years ago when I was just finishing college I dated a Greek boy... I've had opportunity to taste more Greek dishes than most Americans... didn't like a single one of them. And as for desserts like baklava, I'm allergic to honey... so no way do those pass my lips. Travelling in Greece and visiting friends there many times did not eliminate my dislike of Greek food.

Great post and something I wish I could get up and see in Charlotte!  Swell way to combine something interesting with your field of business!  Of course what caught my eye was the Greek word Yiasou.  The amazing thing is that just THIS AFTERNOON I went to a small Greek-owned restaurant and asked the owner about this word.  Apparently, it is an abbreviation to mean to "your health".  But like 'yeah' is slang for 'yes', it has now boiled down to simply 'hello'.   My Greek mother taught me many things...

John Henry good morning, John, and thanks... our Greek festival in Charlotte is a very big deal in the Queen City... one of the biggest ethnic festivals here. With a name like John Henry, I'd have never guessed you had Greek heritage.

Ah!  I noted that the festival was over when I responded above.  I had no idea Greeks liked Charlotte!  Ha! My sweet mother's name was: Maria Papachristopoulos, bless her!  My dad was a GI stationed in Athens.  My brother was born in Ankara, Turkey!  I graduated from an American high school there.  I grew up eating Med food and enjoying the Mediterranean lifestyle!!  I am thinking I should do Son of the Mediterranean diet now!  Thanks, Nina Hollander
