Keep Your Eye On The Ball

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

WimbledonMany sellers and buyers in real estate DO NOT remain committed to a goal as their good agent does. This LACK OF FOCUS is a killer. It costs money and time and ends up in frustration.

They need to

KEEP THEIR EYE ON THE BALL.

I like to illustrate a post with a good photo that makes things obvious. Look at this Wimbledon photo of the groundskeepers pulling the tarp out over the grass courts prior to an oncoming rain shower. Tennis star Anna Kornakova is providing the male workers an OBVIOUS distraction. I'm surprised some didn't trip and have the tarp roll over them. You know, it's that female powers thing! Don't you ladies say you don't know what I am talking about.

But seriously the point is, distractions of many types can be very hard to overcome. Don't deny that they are there. I used to play four hours of tennis in the hot summer Texas sun and believe me I focused on the flight of the ball over the net to win many sets. If I was playing Anna I probably wouldn't have won even any games. Here are a few tips to eliminate or minimize distractions:

* block out time just for what you want to accomplish, and be in that zone, not allowing distractions to enter the zone. Think of doing your taxes. Lock yourself in a room and don't come out till you are done.

* remove distractions as best you can. If in your office there is that cubicle or water cooler talk that sucks up your time, go into the office briefly, but then get out of there.

* plan ahead and have deadlines. Know what you are doing today at 3 pm to 4 pm and you only have to 4 pm to complete it and then you are heading to the gym. Don't deviate from the plan. It can't be done perfectly all the time, but do the best you can within your power, and make it work.

* stay motivated by breaking things into bite size chunks. You can't clean the house or your desk in one day but it can be done in three days with so much time allocated per day. That way you can stay focused on a menial task and not get distracted in a wide four hour window.

* create patterns in your life. Are you a morning person or a night person? Some like jazzercise at 5 a.m. Some don't get out of bed till 7 a.m. and prefer the treadmill at 6 p.m. Stick with your patterns and put those appointments with yourself on the calendar.

* set up filters in your email from whom you want to read from. Delete yourself from dumb lists you earlier subscribed to that now have no value. Check email at various times during the day, NOT ALL DAY long.

* Just say no to unnecessary meetings and events others want you to attend. These can be MAJOR distractions to you.

* Disconnect from the phone by picking up and returing voice mails certain times of the day. Leave a message saying you will return calls from 2 to 4 pm for example.

* Finally, leave your Surfboard at home. Surfing web sites during prime time is a HUGE distraction. Do this during some down time or personal time like for online shopping or bill paying or blog reading/writing.

Keep your eye on the ball and not Anna and something might actually get done!

Gary~ you would make an excellent life coach.  Staying in the moment is difficult for me, which is why I tend to find myself unfocused and easily distracted.  I'll take your advice and try to work on my issues.

Lisa: Thank you for your recommendation. Maybe a second business? I think the thing with distractions is to keep them away. They invade our space. It's almost like we have to build walls to keep them out. Staying in the moment is working hard to not think into the future while you are working on something. Do that with your plan and your calendar, but when you are in the moment STAY there.

Gary, You're so right, distractions come up all the time.  I still do the "list" thing and try to stick with it because i love the feeling when it's accomplished!  But I certainly could save my calls for a return time.

Gary - You really know how to get us going.  It is so important to keep ones eye on the ball.  The list you provided as to how to accomplish this works well.

I too agree this is a great post.

First of all - the photo cracked me up!  Classic!

All of your tips were brilliant!  The one that really works well for me is breaking up a project into manageable pieces.  That goes for either work or things that need to be done around the house.  I am TOTALLY a scheduler and list maker.  I ALWAYS leave room for detours and random, unforseen events, but for the most part I know what I need to do each day.

Gary, I do agree. Agents tend to get distracted and not keep their eye on the ball. That is one of the things we talked about in the makeover assignmnet this week. Most Realtors or any sales people tend to not like schedules but they work. If you still to it for 45 days you will create a new habit and then it will not be a struggle.

Carole: The "to do" lists with prioritization and discipline can assist greatly in reducing distractions.

Jennifer: I try to keep things interesting and get us all thinking.

Don: You're welcome.

Leesa: I like your reminder of not being a "rigid" scheduler and adding in buffer time. They say how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. Sounds like you are good at that one.

Missy: Great point, about taking new rules or ideas and turning them into habits. If you stuck with something 45 days it definitely would be a habit. It goes along with a makeover, and voilla, a new YOU!

Gary - this is an excellent post once again. Blocking out time for what you want to accomplish is oh so important! And I agree about the distractions. I think we all have many distractions in our lives, but it is important to stay focused so that we can achieve our goals.

Gary these are wonderful guidelines. Personally I've found it necessary to work for a block of time from home these days. Years ago that would be more distracting for me than being at the office but times change! Loved the photo....it made me laugh and although I'm a woman, I have no idea what you're talking about! I have no interest in looking at Anna's backside. LOL!

Sharon: I'm just amazed how easily I am distracted all the time. I think we tend to do what is easiest over what is what we should be doing.

Colleen: Good thought on focused work at home. With an office door closed you can be very productive. Yeah, I know on the photo for you lovely ladies I should have put Antonio Banderas up there as YOUR distraction. Equal time : ) But you get the point.

Gary, how about surfing and spending time on AR? To tell you the truth it takes me about 3 hours to write, answer comments, leave comments... etc. And this on daily basis!

Sometime I found them beneficial sometimes a distraction I hardly keep up with.

Arina: Too much Active Rain surfing has got to be a distraction unless that is what you are choosing to do. It all comes down to your alternatives. While Active Rain is very beneficial it no doubt for all of us can be done too much. How much is too much is a decision for each of us to make individually.
