Nature's Fireworks

This evening in Northern Virginia after a day of sweltering temperatures that actually reached 100 degrees, we're watching an amazing thunder and lightning display move its way through Alexandria.

Since I live on the 16th floor of a high-rise condominium building (Alexandria Knolls West -- where I currently have this wonderful listing for sale on the 8th floor), I've got a panoramic view of nature's fireworks.

Here's a clip of some video that I shot this evening from my balcony:

We certainly hope we don't have a replay of last August when lightning struck our condo building.

I just had Gary watching with me...we both agreed...your lightening goes straight down...ours goes across the sky...not often pointing down. Wow....that was spectacular!

We call it HotAlanta for a reason reached 100+ here with no rain... but it was nice sitting in the pool just kicking back

Hi Brian, we are having the same thing. We have tornado warnings out as well. Nice post.

Brian - Interesting idea for a post. I have seen quite of bit of lightning like this during 2008, but last year was crazy. It rained almost 60 straight days in the early summer of 2007 here in Austin. Have a great Sunday!

Brian: That was quite a display. With you being on the 16th floor, you have an excellent seat for watching this spectacular presentation. I bet the view is absolutely wonderful. I wish you luck on your listing. I took a peek and it looks great. Take care...

Brian, lets see, Lightening and Huricanes, vs Lightening, Thunderstorms and tornados vs earthquakes. Hummmm, I wonder which one is worse in the long run. Hey the fireworks were great from a distance. AJ

Brian - Thanks for sharing; it is much easier to watch nature's fireworks on video. Growing up on an island I have seen many spectacular displays.

My family and I were watching Indian Jones and the Temple of Doom last night when the storm came through. At first I thought it was heat lightening, but was glad to see some rain after yesterday's scorcher!

Wow that is amazing lightning footage that you took! So, did you get any rainfall to cool you guys down? It is just plain hot here in VA Beach!

I stood on my front porch last night and just watched the display better than the 4th of July fireworks.

ERIC: Hotlanta! It was hot here too yesterday and today... Thank goodness for air conditioning.

GARY: There were tornadoes earlier in the week, then this! Hot and humid again today.

KAREN ANNE: Thanks for your comments. We certainly do have a front row seat for Nature's Fireworks. On July 4th, we can also see some wonderful manmade fireworks.

AJ: I prefer that they stay at a distance. Last year they came much too close!

JENNIFER: My wife and I enjoyed watching the fireworks from the comfort of our condo. It's a bit scary considering that last August lightning actually hit our building!

Great views. I was at an outdoor party last night in the storm, just hoping that the tent we were standing under was not going to fall down or be hit by lightening. Not too smart!

What a magnifcent video you captured....beautiful. I live in a very high lightning area too. The heat and humidity really brings them on.
You must have a beautiful view from the 16th floor. I lived on the 16th floor of a highrise a about 8 years ago and it was gorgeous ( I could watch fireworks displays in 4 different towns on July 1st, Canada Day, from my balcony).
Does your building sway slightly in windstorms? I remember that took some getting used to for me and I found it quite frightening at first.

JUDY: Outdoor parties during thunderstorms are not my idea of a good time!

MARGARET: Yes, I definitely enjoy the video camera. We've had video for years and years, but never quite as convenient and small as the Flip. We can't see the National Mall fireworks from our place but we see plenty of other area fireworks (including Alexandria and some parts of Maryland) on July 4th!

TOM: Crofton! Did you call Margaret? Thanks for calling me yesterday.

JO: Thanks for your comments on my video. I love being high up in a high-rise building. We don't get any sway in the wind -- the building is very solidly constructed.
