Recently, I have been taking more general photos of the White Plains downtown area. I'm often surprised at the clash of architectural styles. I guess part of my surprise is the way in which the clashing styles actually work together. When you see an Art Nouveau building standing directly next to mirrored glass and steel, the effect can be jarring. Here on some shots of the “old” and “new” that I had previously discarded. They are all within about a block to block and a half between each other...

PHOTOS:

1. The Ritz Carlton with Trump Tower and One City Place being reflected - sits next to the Barr Building.

2. Grace Church of downtown White Plains sits beside one of the Ritz Carlton tower - lending a very stark contrast of size and style.

3. The fountains of City Center surround Trump Tower and One City Place and The Lofts Complex.

4. Almost directly across from the City Center/Trump complex sits White Plains City Hall which in turn is sandwiched between One North Brodaway(a modern retail and office complex) the Ritz Carlton and Grace Church.

Ruthmarie, being originally from Scarsdale, which hasn't changed too much, it's interesting to see how much White Plains has changed since I was a kid.

White Plains has changed completely in the past 10 years.... I don't know how much of this is for the better.  Certainly city dwellers like it here and they are coming in from NYC.  But there is a lot of infrastructure involved in all these changes and I worry that too much too fast may become an issue.  The newly elected City Council is more of the mind to do a "wait and see" before allowing any new LARGE projects. I think the caution is warrented.  Cities need to be PLANNED not turned over to builders to do "whatever." The interesting thing is going to be what happens in Yonkers, New Rochelle, Ossining and Peekskill. So far they haven't taken flight like White Plains, but i wonder if its only a matter of time.

Some of the River towns are also looking at slower more moderate growth.  Tarrytown and Sleepy Hollow are working to develop their communities without too much "sprawl" and without high-rise mania.

Scarsdale is great...but unless you are in a coop - its very, very expensive.

You've inspired me.  Think I will grab my camera and get some shots around town ... instead of sitting here glued to AR :)

Hi Marie - It's fun - remember that digital cameras have the advantage of being able to take LOTS of shots.  Don't be shy about taking a ton of pices.  I had a lot of rejects to get good ones...and HAVE FUN!  If you don't enjoy the result, there is no point in doing it.

Great shots Ruth Marie,  One of the fun things about White Plains, you can leave Ritz-Carlton and walk 2 minutes to Target or Walmart.

It is a fun town!

Good luck with the "New Office"

All the best!

Thanks Kevin...If you are in the downtown, everything is close at hand - including the railroad...just a few blocks in the other direction.

Hi Marchel,

I love older buildings. Grace Church is lovely.  It's now dwarfed by the towers - but still beautiful. Thanks for the comments about the pics.  I take a great deal of time bringing the areas that I cover to "life" for those who have never seen Westchester before.
