Last Wednesday was a monkey wrench day for me.  While doing my occupancy checks I found one that had gone vacant.  The power was off, the lawn had not been cut the trash was not taken out, the doors were open.  To be sure I went to the neighbors who verified the vacancy.

The garage door was unlocked so my assistant and I went in, the house was a mess, then we heard a noise.  Birds the occupants had left two pet birds behind.  The police humane officer refuses to assist because it was not a dog or cat, the SPCA was closed, this day.  What to do?

I am far from an animal lover but what to do with two birds left for dead?  Luckily a local bird store agreed to take the birds in and care for them so I placed the birds in their cages, that had mounds of feces 6-7 inches in height in my car and took the birds to the bird store.

Later that night my cell phone began to ring, I did not pickup for whatever reason.  When I listened to the message it was the property owner upset with me for trespassing as they had not vacated.  I called back and asked how they were living there with no food, no furniture, not hot water, and no electric.  Of course I got a smart answer of we only sleep here, nothing else and don't come back your trespassing.

I think the man's tone set me off as I went into a rant about occupancy and property abandonment and the lenders right under state law and the mortgage agreeement to protect its interests in the property if needed.  I then proceeded to advise the former owner that if he pushed the matter crimnal charges would be placed against him for the treatment of his birds which was well documented by myself and the local bird expert.

If you are someone losing your home to foreclosure, your pets need not suffer along with you.  Please bring your pets to the local SPCA or humane society!

That's so SAD...I would never leave my pets behind...But they are the worst victims in many situations...look at Katrina.

What type of birds were there? I am so sorry for this home, those people and birds. How some human being come to that?

Some people don't think of their pets as part of the family, so it is easy for them to leave them behind, I have found cats and dogs at several foreclosed properties that I have been sent to for lawn mowing/ clean up. I know I could never leave my "daughter" (Chloey my dog) behind like that because she is such a big part of my family. I can somewhat understand not taking them with them when they are in that situation, but like you said there are places they can be dropped off at so they can be taken care of and not just left for dead.

That is sad, for the people and the animal.

I am so glad that you did a post about this very important issue.  I had a friend whose property was sold in a short sale, and he had to rent a room in a mobile home.  He had to give his dog away, because pets were not allowed, and his dog was enormous.  He was already going through such a rough time with the short sale, and to make matters worse, he had to give up a member of his family.

Jeff - This is a big problem nationwide.  I suppose these people are so stressed out that good judgment is no longer being exercised.  This is still no reason to abandon a living thing especially when there are organizations that can help.

Jeff, think of me next time.  I am very active in local rescue groups of all kinds of animals and would be happy to jump in for the sake of the animals, no problem...

Very sad----I take in stays--some how they find their way to my home---but it hurts when I have to say no--I really can't handle another pet!

Good for you Jeffery!  I hate when people harm defenseless animals.  I also can't beleive that owner had the gall to call you about it.  Unreal!

I agree! It certainly is not the pets fault that anyone faces financial trouble. good post!

Good story, Jeff. Your efforts spared the lives of the birds. No law enforcement official would have reprimanded you for your actions. To the contrary, I believe they would applaud your decision to find appropriate care for the birds. Owners who abandon their pets should be tracked down for the perpetration of cruelty if they've made little of no effort to find adequate care for them. Of course, the owners need housing as well, but the provision of a listing of available social services to help them should be offered if possible to help them weather the storm. This is a sad time we live in because of the millions of home owners in crisis. Our pets are little people and have feelings and need love and care, too.

Way to go Jeff. It is hard to believe that some can be so very heartless.

Jeff, that's so sad.  I'm glad you were able to find someone to take in the poor birds and care for them.  Some people are just unbelievable.

Kudos to you Jeff...You did the right thing for the Birds..It's hard enough to listen to some of the stories that the people give when you do your cash for keys but to have to walk in to see animals left behind is awful..We had a cat left behind in one of ours but thankfully the nieghbors took it in..

We are dealing with is issue more and more here on Cape Cod...I have made it a point to start a webpage for Renters that accept pets and renters who have pets.  Feel free to refer them to my webpage that has tips on renting with pets etc...Every little bit helps! www.TaraStoneHomes.com click on Save Our Pets.

I know it easy to be angry with these Dog and Cat owners when we see what is happening..but getting angry and passing judgement doesn't help.  If you feel this..GET INVOLVED!  Be part of the solution and you may see a different side of this terrible issue.
