Will the new "Hands Free" law affect you?

Starting July 1st, 2008, any cell phone use while driving in Washington could get you $101 ticket. This includes reading or writing text messages, or talking on a cell phone without a hands-free device. Similar laws have been in effect in many other states, including military installations within Washington state.

The new "Hang up and Drive" law considers cell phone use without a hands-free device a "secondary" offense. This means that a patrol officer would need to have another reason, such as speeding or driving with a broken break light, to pull someone over. Avoiding a ticket is simple: DRIVE SAFELY

There's no doubt in my mind that keeping one's hands on the steering wheel and one's eyes on the road at all times is prudent and safe. I, as well as many other people who spend a lot of time in their cars, are utilizing driving time to do other things that might take some of our concentration away, such as  listening to music, eating lunch, glancing at our GPS, talking with passengers etc...

I own a hands-free phone device, but it still requires a significant amount of fumbling. While these new laws are sensible, they are no substitute for common sense when it comes to other activities in the car. I'm waiting for a hands-free lipstick applicator to come on the market and a hands-free sandwich holder.

I think just about every one in a car nowadays is using a cell phone, along with other things too, while driving 80mph, it's scary.

Cindy,

I don't think it will be long before cars will come standard with voice activated links to our cell phones, where all we have to say is "text Michael" or "call Jennie", and the car will do it for us. The car navigation systems are already helping us keep our eyes on the road, rather then skimming map pages. Isn't technology great?

Oh- you beat me to it! I was going to write a post called "Stick It In Your Ear". I may still, if I can think of clever and funny enough things to put in the body of the post.

Sandy, we've had about four towns in our area ban cell phone use and texting while in active school zones. They haven't banned them any other places or times like Washington, D.C. and New York. The fine can be steep, something like $300.

Sandy, There are times when I wish I had no phone to use...Got along for years without one....Can't tell you how many times someone has moved from one lane to another ( and cut me off) without signaling or even looking. Why?  Because their on the damn phone!       I just don't feel that important to always be in constant contact with someone else.  I want to get wherever I am going and then call..  BTW, I don't think the new law will change anything......

Kim,

I just got back from a two week European vacation where I could not use my cell phone. That's when you realize how addicted you are. Now that I'm back I will try to be less glued to my phone. I think the new law will change things. It will for me.

I'm not going along with this stupid law that only is another way for our politicians to soak us for $$ not to mention the millions manufactors will make on this.   If you agree and you don't want to waste your momey on a device go do what I did and attach your phone to the center of your steering wheel with a piece of velcro.  This allows you to talk on the phone and have both hands on the wheel.  Of course you need to have a speaker phone...it works great!!!

Mike,

Sounds like you're pretty ingenious. Your solution wouldn't work for me, though, since the center of the steering wheel is where my airbag is located.
