Lake Camanche, a newer community in Amador County, Camanche area is more spread out. Not so much a town as an area of growth outside of a town. If you are looking for a big lot to build on, with a good commute to Sacramento or Stockton, with great recreation nearby, Camanche is the place for you. Rolling hills and breathtaking vistas reminiscent of the legendary "West" Camanche is also has some of the more affordable real estate in Amador County, The trade off is that Ione is the closest city, about five miles to the north. Camanche Blues, a gas station and mini-mart, and La Bella Rosa Restaurant are the only retail type stores in the area, and they do an admirable job. Camanche Blues does have just about one of everything, and La Bella Rosa is some of the best dinning in the county, Some say "the best in five counties" Don't miss the home made tequila pie!
The lake it self I a wonderful recreational treasure, managed by East Bay Municipal Utilities District, great fishing, water skiing, and camping are all available, as are some very nice prefab homes with lake views and access.
Numerous homes with breathtaking views are available overlooking the lake. Many quite affordable.
Update
Sadly, La Bella Rosa is gone, Well not quite gone just moved and changed it's name. Now if you want what some say is the best food in five counties, you need to go to the Twisted Fork in the Ione hotel on Main Street in Ione.

The Lake Comanche community is a great area for affordable homes and "ranchetts." The last I heard La Bella Rosa had closed up, but I'm not sure. I will testify to the good food, especially the spaghetti and meat balls.
Another growing a community, but on the south side of Lake Comanche (although it is in Calaveras instead of Amador County) is Wallace. Its attributes are similar to those of the Lake Comanche community. Wallace does have a post office, gas station, and a few other small businesses.
