Bear Repair and Other of Life's Surprises

By
Real Estate Agent with Keller Williams Realty 0575737

Working in Real Estate is a real eye opener. Whomever said it was a people business got that as an "understatement." You get to see the best and the worst in folks during an emotional and trying time in their lives. Being the observer in life in the people business it has sharpened my visual and sensing skills in all areas of my life. I used to think life and people would surprise me "some" of the time. I now think people surprise me "ALL" of the time. On the negative side you will have people lie to you. Some will hold a grudge and not forgive you for an innocent mistake. Whom you thought was a friend will abandon you during tough times. Many surprises around you. Healthy people will fall ill and even die. Very sad. Those who you thought were supposed to love you forever fall out of love. People will tell you one thing and then do another. To all the things that surprise you on the negative side of the ledger which I can't control, I just say, "Isn't that interesting?"

Bear Repair

But despite all the disappointment I have seen with people I must firmly admit I have seem many more good surprises. People continually amaze me, inspire me, get me jazzed with the goodness I find in their hearts.

One woman I found doing bear repair. What is that you ask? The young daughter of a Mom had the dog nearly chew off the ear of a stuffed bear and the little one was crying. Mom, jumped into action without a single thought, grabbed some thread and started the repair with a patch, all along assuring the child that the bear would be all right. Amazing!

Broken Down Car

Another instance before the days of cell phones, my car broke down and I was in the middle of traffic just sitting there stalled out.

Car after car passed me for what seemed like an hour and finally some young twenty year old guy in a beat up car with literally hundreds of soda pop cans in his vehicle asked if I needed a lift to the convenience store to get to a phone to get a tow.

He even offered the 25 cents for the pay phone.

Don't ever believe Good Samaritans still don't exist!!

Innocent Eyes

Finally, I used to volunteer after school hours for these underprivileged elementary school kids at their apartment with a church group. Our job was to get them an afternoon meal of franks and beans and help them with their 2nd grade math and reading. It felt real good to give them a good meal and do the tutoring part.

They got to know our group as their little helpers and we brought little smiles to their day. But like a lot of volunteering you are paid back far and away more from them than what you are giving. One day when I was having a hard day in my own life from other things in the adult world before I left the children at the end, one little girl ran up to me and gave me the biggest hug and said, "Thanks, Mr. Gary." It gives you hope in the world that things are still all ok.

Single Kind Act

So when you see all those negative surprises with people in your life, remember there are many good ones out there as well.

Change World

It does seem like we can change the world, one single act of kindness at a time.

I like to say in the world there are two sides. See BOTH SIDES but know the good far outweighs the bad.

Gary, I had to check out your blog.  My husband says you inpsire him and you are very positive.  Thank you!  I totally understand about all kinds of people, too.  I still believe there are more nice and good than bad people.  Whenever I encounter people that are not so nice, I wonder what kind of past wounds they have that aren't resolved yet.  I will never forget what one of my favorite pastors, Ted Roberts said, "That wounded people wound others!"  That has stayed with me and it helps me.

You might want to check out my recent post and put a little smile on your face on The Dog Waggin vendors.

Have a Colorful Day!

Hi again Gary -- I love this post, and especially the Judy Collins song! (My Dad used to tell me I sounded like her when I sang.)There are two sides to a story, two sides to motivations of people, and I believe, even through the tough times, there is good in everyone. It is best to not label someone or try to keep the down or pigeon-holed into some type of label. We really don't know clouds --- and sometimes other people -- at all! All the Best - Julianna

Denise: I hope one of the smiles is yours : )

Liz: I think the TV news has us thinking bad first of everything.

Mary: I think it is good to be realistic. But I swear, if we open our eyes to the good, it is right there.

Tom: Thanks.

Judy: Mr. Gary didn't mean to make you cry, but touching you in an emotional way is good.

Irene: I agree that people who hurt others, are hurting inside. I'll check out your post.

Dan: Thanks as always.

Julianna: If you sing like Judy you have a smooth voice. I like this version better than the Joni Mitchell version. Looking for the good in most people, you will find it. God bless.

Gary, I love that song, it's been awhile since I heard it. You made great points and I believe the good people outweigh the negative ones as well.

Gary,

You write such great stuff.  Uplifting, original, well thought out, pertinent.  Joni Mitchell and Redneck 10 Commandments.    Have a great week.

Well Gary I guess that all the bad the ugly and the wonderful... are part of life. It is always great to find good positive people along the way.

Carole: A child of the 60's, the original song by Joni Mitchell was 1969. End of the Flower Power generation. The good DO outweigh the bad.

Gary: I mix it up to keep it interesting.

Arina: The bad and the ugly will be there. But the good and beautiful (like YOU) will ALWAYS outshine them! : )

Nice post Gary. There is so much good in the world, you just have to look a little harder some days than you do on others. The good times really do sustain us though. When Max was a really little boy and didn't want to leave Mommy to go to school, I used to tuck kisses in his pockets and up his sleeves so he could take them out later when he was missing me. That's how life is, you have to tuck little happy memories up your sleeve for a rainy day.

Hi Gary - I've been out of town and have missed your blogs! It's funny that, just before reading this post, I'd honestly just listened to the Judy collins song playing on the CD. How's that for being synchronized?! Yes, I think there are really two ways we view Life: 1. that there are 4 sides, and they create the boxes we can't seem to get our head around, OR 2., that there are 2 sides, the inner/reflected & the outer/manifested... now maybe unconditional Love is about ONE SIDE ONLY??? The side of Love...ONE can only be ONE with everyone...

Susan: That is such a sweet motherly thing to do with Max with the tucked in kisses. When my Mom was leaving me in kindergarten I was such a Mama's boy I pulled a crying tantrum on the floor and they had to get the principal to settle me down. It was a famous story in our family and also showed my stubborn streak. Storing up memories for a rainy day is a GREAT idea.

Mara: Hey stranger. A Judy Collins psychic connection? Cool. I like the idea of the one box of unconditional love. The world would be a better place if we had a whole lot more of that.

Gary - I often say that I am an optimist in spite of all evidence to the contrary.  I am continually surprised by the "bad" in the human world and continually renewed by the "good".   I did math stations last year in my daughter's class.  I had a great time doing it.  Just listening & interacting with the kids was a fantastic experience.  Good post & good work!

Carol: So true. If you toss the bad overboard and let it float away in your wake of your fast moving boat, it just makes you feel so much better. The good DOES outnumber the bad.
