Jewish Festival of Sukkot Starts Sundown October 13

Sukkot is a Jewish holiday that begins five days after Yom Kippur. The Sukkot holiday lasts seven days, and no work is permitted during the first two days.
Sukkot celebrates and acknowledges the forty years the Jewish people spent wandering through the desert after leaving Egypt. During this time, they lived in temporary shelters, called "Sukkahs". It is also known as the "Festival of Booths" (or Tents) in Christian circles.
A major symbol of this festive holiday is the "Sukkah", the temporary dwelling in which the Jewish people lived while wandering through the desert. Jewish tradition states that the Sukkah be built, decorated and lived in during the week of Sukkot. It is used to eat and sleep in. However, given some people cannot afford to, nor have the place to install it (or have the time to build and decorate one), Sukkots can be found in Kosher resturants, campus Hillels, or Synagogues. This allows the devout to still fulfill the mitzvah of sitting in one.
Another way some celebrate is by working with home-building organizations like Habitat for Humanity to create a dwelling for another. To learn more about how to celebrate Sukkot in modern times, click here!
