As professional stagers we are often asked by homesellers to assist in deciding the advisibility of removing wallpaper.  It is not inexpensive to remove wallpaper.  However, if the goal of homestaging is to assist in making a listing appeal to the broadest number of prospective buyers then how can we skip this critical step?

Take a look at the following projects staged by Design To Market and see what you think.

Thanks Michelle.

One thing I forgot to mention...never never paint over wallpaper!  Remove it!  (A skim coat can work when faced with no other alternative.)

You are very welcome.

I have people ask all the time if they can paint over wallpaper. It can bubble, you'll still see the seams, and when you find out how crummy it looks, you just made the stripping job harder by sealing the wallpaper with paint so the wallpaper adhesive remover can't penetrate to help you out.

Everyone hates to take down wallpaper, but it is a necessary evil. And when putting wallpaper up, for cryin out loud...size the wall so the next guy doesn't have such a terrible time! I sell plenty of wallpaper, but hardly ever does anyone buy a can of sizer/primer.

Lower your karmic debt....SIZE BEFORE WALLPAPERING!

Jo: 500%, no 1000% better without the wallpaper. Removing wallpaper is not cheap, but it is a lot less expensive than the average monthly carrying costs on a house that does not sell. Another great post, Jo. Thanks for showing us the difference removing wallpaper can make.

It looks so much better, I am not a big fan of wallpaper at all, so I say " It's gotta go " thanks for the great before and after pictures, makes so much difference.

While I agree that removing wallpaper is not much fun, most homeowners can do it themselves.  Well worth the effort.  Your photos prove it.

Jo,

Definitely looks better without the wallpaper. You now have made the home more desirable for a broader range of potential buyers.  Great job! I am taking on a similar project this week, that I will be sharing with the stagers on AR soon. This one has wallpaper on every inch of every wall in the house, including the ceilings, so it should be interesting!

Great job Jo!  Removing that wallpaper made the world of difference! It changed the entire fell of the home from 'frumpy and dumpy' feeling to 'lovely and elegant'! Nice job showing the changes!  Regards-Kathleen G

Jo,

Practically nothing freaks potential buyers out like wallpaper!

My advice for home owners is; unless you know beyond a shadow of a doubt, that you will be staying in that house with that wallpaper paper for at least 10 years, just say no.

The great side benefit with the wallpaper removal on this project was that it really transformed the look of the custom window treatments.
