Microsoft’s $24M Charlotte Campus Expansion, to Create 430 High-Paying, High-Tech Jobs

Microsoft to Invest Nearly $24M in Their Charlotte Campus Expansion, Creating 430 High-Paying, High-Tech Jobs

While Microsoft already has a strong foothold in the Steele Creek area of Charlotte, their upcoming 430-job expansion is a welcomed expansion that had Charlotte competing with other cities across the nation. Mayor Vi Lyles was thrilled to announce that Microsoft executives view Charlotte as a destination for high tech skills and creating opportunity for that.

 High Tech, High Salaries

Microsoft first came to Charlotte in the early 1990s, establishing a campus off Arrowood Road in the Steele Creek area. The company currently employees over 1,100. The 430 positions will be placement for "high technical" skills with the average pay wage of $98,711. Currently, the average wage in Mecklenburg County is $66,709.

It is unclear whether Microsoft plans to build a new facility at its 22-acre Arrowood Road campus, but at this time, the $23.9 million investment is earmarked to go toward hiring new employees and updating current facilities at that location. Microsoft currently owns two office buildings at the Arrowood Road campus with approximately 408,000 square feet being occupied by MS.

This signals that Charlotte’s tech sector is poised for even more future growth, which is music to Charlotte economy. Microsoft could receive up to $7.9 million in state incentives if it meets the goals created for job creation and investment, according to a release from the governor’s office. In addition, incentives for Microsoft’s expansion from the City include around $664,000, to be paid out over seven years, as well a similar proposal from Mecklenburg County, giving Microsoft up to $816,117. Of course, these proposals still have to be approved by the Charlotte City Council and the Mecklenburg County Commission, respectively.

What a coup. If I ever decided to leave Colorado, I think Charlotte would be at the top of my list of places I'd consider going.
