My late mother, Silicon Valley super agent Judy Carr, began her real estate career when I was just ten. In many ways, I feel like I started my real estate career at the same time.
For those of you who were raised in a real estate family, you know what I mean. Real estate is an all-consuming business and there are many times when it is literally "all hands on deck".
As a young girl I would help my mom with simple tasks, such as folding and stamping letters, newsletters and postcards. In high school, I became a competent typist and started writing up her newsletters for her. Sometimes I even babysat her clients' children so my mother could show the parents' properties and write up an offer in peace.
I saw how hard she worked for her clients as a REALTOR. Time was not her own. When the phone rang, she had to run. Late night appointments and weekend open houses were the norm. Vacations and time off were not.
People often asked me, "So are you going to follow in your mother's footsteps and go into real estate?"
I would think to myself, (and sometimes say out loud), "Do I look insane? Why would anyone in their right mind want to work that hard?"
As an adult, I realized my poor hard-working mommy needed help from someone she could trust-and that person was me, the one she'd trained for so many years. So even though it was difficult, I knew the only way she would ever take some time off or get a vacation was if I began working with her.
And that's how "Being a Realtor's Daughter Led to Career in Real Estate".
