Monday Musings: Breaking the Shell!

By

One of our favorite sculptors is Michelangelo.  What draws us to him are not the finished works that the world of experts have praised, but the unfinished ones.  Pictured above is one of his unfinsihed works said to be a slave or a prisoner. Our first stop when we visit Florence, is The Academia Gallery which houses the famous statue of David as well as his unfinished works.

"Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it." Michelangelo

In studying them, we are both filled with the desire to grab a chisel and get those people out of the marble, to set them free.  Although they are unfinished, we see what Michelangelo was about to free from the stone.  We liken this to humans who want to find their inner essence and break the shell they have grown.

As humans we are works in progress: evolving, adapting, and adjusting to what or who comes our way. We chip away at the personas we have tried on, all the "stuff and theories" we have gathered along our paths in search of the person we are inside. Inherently we know that  the truth is inside of us, if we chisel away all the influences that cloud that path.  Like a sculptor we discover who we really are and what we really want, our truth.

Your pain is the breaking of the shell that encloses your understanding.

Khalil Gibran

Truth is a deep kindness that teaches us to be content in our everyday life and share with the people the same happiness.

Khalil Gibran

Happy Monday and we wish you a wonderful week.

Wow! Love this, I have heard the quote before about how he viewed marble, and chipping away everything that is not the statue, but this hit home for me today, especially the photo of the unfinished piece.

HI Ron and Alexandra-you really can't get a full appreciation of the talents of Michaelangelo or any other sculptors until you can view a piece like the one above. It's easy to take the work for granted.

And yes, we're all much like works of art in progress. We chip away at our own personalities in the hopes of creating a beautiful work of art.

What a wonderful analogy, Alexandra, comparing the human "condition" to Michaelangelo's work. Sometimes I say I'm still waiting to see what I'll be when I grow up... and that's just another way of saying, I'm a work in progress.

Nick Vandekar, 610-203-4543 I have seen the unfinished works many times, and the feeling has resurface each time.  I apply it when we work on someone's brand, it is about chipping away what is not them.  A

Kathy Streib we come into the world beautiful, and our parents emphasize that, and then we get lost in performance of what is expected of us rather that what makes our hearts sing.  A

Nina Hollander I think that the human condition is getting rid of all those well intentioned and loving ideas that we have amassed growing up and through life's experiences.  There is a crab creature we occasionally encounter on the beach that pick up shells and small pebbles for itself.  It is interesting because it creates sculptures to hide in...never his/hers.  A

Barbara Todaro since I have met you through Active Rain and learned re your. victory in staying slim, every time, I see an obese person, I see their slimness hiding in them.  Sort of like Michelangelo saw the person or people in the blocks of marble.  I silently wish them a mentor like you.  A

Enjoyed the analogy and photo.  Here is one by a local artist, who was obviously inspired by Mike:

The artist is Albin Polasek, and this is called 'Man carving his own Destiny'

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel,

This work in progress also gives us insight as to how Michelangelo develops his masterpieces.

Michelangelo was an incredible sculptor - I've particularly enjoyed his unfinished works. I love the "breaking the shell" analogy you spoke about. Gibran's quotes are particularly apt here.

Loved this post Alexandra, and indeed I love Michelangelo and most of his unfinished work. I agree with you life is an "unfinished process" we keep working towards the finish... and we all know what that is so I am in no rush:)Endre

Excellent analogy - we are all works of art in progress, aren't we?

I wonder what Michelangelo thought and why he stopped his work on certain pieces. Maybe he misjudged and didn't have enough rock left for the head? :-)
