Gratitude Challenge: Grateful for my Dentist and my Oral Surgeon

ActiveRain Ambassador Debe Maxwell has challenged blogger members to post a Thanksgiving Gratitude blog each week during November. I will share a current experience for my first blog entry for this challenge to demonstrate my gratitude for good medical care.

I was experiencing some discomfort in the area above one of my front teeth that happened to be a crown that replaced a tooth damaged when I was playing basketball many years ago. My dentist, Dr. Rizwan Ahmad at Kentlands Dentistry took an x-ray and confirmed that I had an infection. He prescribed a ten day course of Amoxicillin and recommended an implant tooth replacement as the best alternative. He assured me that I would hate the process and referred me to Dr. John J. Mennitt at Drs. Mennitt & Daly, PA for a consultation.

Dr. Ahmad told me that I would need a temporory tooth during the process and I went throught the mold process to have a temporary tooth, called a flipper, prepared. My consultation with Dr. Mennitt took place on October 22 and he peformed the implant surgery on October 28 and prescribed a stronger antibiotic, Amoxicillin-Clav. Thankfully, and much to my surprise, I did not need to use the prescribed pain medication during my recovery. My follow up appointment was on Friday, November 8 and it appears that all is going well. My next appointment will be on January 28.

One of the challenges of this implant process is that you have to go about three months before the impant will be ready to accept a new tooth that will be furnished by Dr. Ahmad. My temporary tooth, the flipper, looks good and you would not notice it if I could speak correctly without a bit of a slurr. You can't do any chewing with the flipper in your mouth so you are restricted to liquids and foods that do not require any chewing.

I will not be doing any biting doing the holidays and I will need to go without one of my front teeth to do any eating. This is not fun.

Again, I am thankful for the highly professional medical care that I am receiving.

Good morning, Roy.... sorry to hear of the challenges you're needing to face with a new implant... especially during the holiday season... but at least you have the comfort of knowing you have a great medical team behind you and you'll be good as new soon.

Even though the whole implant process is tedious at best, I am glad that you have a good dental team.  A

Roy, OH MY!   Oral surgery is not fun, and not being able to chew during the Holidays will be a pain, but a new implant will be worth it.

Having finished 11 implants in the last year I found the pain to be very minimal and tylenol/aleve was all I took..good luck !

Roy Kelley,   although I realize this will be a holiday where you will relate to the song" ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS MY TWO FRONT TEETH,   happy for you and your good news.  I have an idea, schedule your holiday treats for January.
