Last fall I decided that I wanted to get back into riding bicycles.  Specifically, I wanted to start riding "off-road" trails, so I did some research and bought myself a new mountain bike.

As any of your know who have bought a new bicycle, this can be a very joyful experience.  The fact that I2008 Motobecane 600HT Mountain bike bought my bicycle on-line and had to wait for it to be delivered made me think of being a kid and waiting for Christmas as it approached!  To say that I was psyched would have been an understatement!

Then disaster hit!  The evening before my bike was to arrive, I tore my right rotator cuff!  No good story here, I simply raised my arm quickly to steady myself when I kind of tripped going down some stairs and "POP!" it tore!

Well, to say the least, this took a bit of the joy out of my bike arriving the next day.  After I signed for it, I drug it with my good arm into the garage and there it sat as I started the odyssey that is being injured with today's modern medical systems!

After a few weeks and as I was waiting to have the surgery to repair the tear, I finally got to get on my bicycle and ride it a bit.  I rode it around the neighborhood and on some flat, paved trails, but since I was still in a fair amount of pain, I didn't push it to much at all.

Being an old road biker, I was a little bit surprised and disappointed at how much work it was to ride one of these things!  One weekend we took the bikes out to ride the Katy Trail (a rails to trails project that runs from north of St. Louis to Sedalia Missouri) and I damn near died from exhaustion during what turned out to be a 15 mile ride!

I actually got to the point where I was regretting my decision to buy a mountain bike when I had to put it away while I recuperated from the surgery.

Time Heals All Wounds

Well, this past week I got to get back on the bike and Kathy and I rode a couple of paved trails near our house.  While it was cool to even be back riding, I was still a bit disappointed by how hard it was to ride.

cup cakesI attributed some of this difficulty to the fact that while I had been recuperating that I hadn't worked out much and also hadn't missed very many opportunities to stuff my face (when you're hurt it's very easy to rationalize overeating!).

So, this past Saturday we took the bikes out to a trail near Weldon Spring Missouri called, "Lost Valley Trail", which I had written about after Kathy and I taken a hike there earlier this spring.  It seemed like a nice compromise between not pushing my healing rotator cuff and getting off road a bit.

If you read my previous post, you'll see that we only hiked a couple of miles into the trail and from what I saw, it was pretty mellow.  Well, was I in for a surprise!

Being on the bikes, it didn't take us long to ride further than we had hiked on our previous visit and we foundSign at entrance to Lost Valley Trail that the trail becomes just that..... a trail!

Pretty soon we were zooming down steep grades and pumping up the next ones.  The trail became more and more challenging as we went along and all thoughts of nursing my shoulder went out the window as I realized that this is what my bike was designed to do!  TALK ABOUT FUN!

Zooming through the woods under a canopy of green, my heart pumping as I jumped the bike over a small tree that had fallen across the road.

My motabecane and Kathy's old bike at cabinI was in heaven!  This was exactly what I had originally had in mind!  And if you think about it, how often do your expectations line up perfectly with the actual experience?  True, I was pushing my shoulder a lot harder than I should have been, but it was definitely worth it!  Now, in the spirit of full-disclosure, I did pass on quite a few of the harder parts of the trail and walked my bike through them, but even still....it was GREAT!

Anyway, the shoulder held up and is no sorer than the rest of me, so I can't wait until I heal up a bit further in order to go back and do the entire trail again.  I know that this post has absolutely nothing to do with real estate, but the experience was so cool that I had to share it!

Thanks for reading about it!

Bob,

Just make sure not to rush any recovery.  I have before and am still paying the price.

Larry....I admit, I shouldn't have done as much as I did, but BOY was it fun! ;-)  Thanks for the comment!

Gosh, Bob. Sounds like you're about ready to take up kayaing and raft guiding! -:)

I used to work for a large canoe/kayaking school and rafting outfitter in the NC mountains. Shoulder dislocations are the most common serious injuries suffered by kayakers. But, in the 1000 employee company for which I worked, the types of injuries that most often caused people to take time of work were mountain bike injuires. Isn't it strange that a group of hard core paddlers like that are most likely to hurt themselves biking?

Well, the good news is that after surgery for rotator cuff injuries, most people say that they end up better than new. I hope you enjoy the same experience. I have a bad shoulder that I never had repaired and since I no longer paddle, I get by OK, but it does hurt sometimes.

That's funny, because I have been eyeballing the idea of taking up kayaking!  ;-)  I can see where you could hurt yourself mountain biking...in order to fully experience the thrill, you have to kind of throw yourself at it...which I didn't do on this ride...

As far as my recovery goes, I won't say that it was a cake walk....well, I did eat a lot of cake during it.....but the shoulder is coming along nicely!  Thanks for the comment!

Ahh... if you're going to kayak, learn from the best! I taught for Nantahala Outdoor Center, but their lead instructor started his own company around 10-15 years ago, Endless River Adventures. My REALTOR(R) son has been teaching kayaking with him since the beginning, full time at first, then by special request from prior students only since he started doing real estate. He also helps them lead trips to Costa Rica and Ecuador during the winter. It's a great sport and hey, if you're into spending money on gas, I can't think of a better way!

By the way, I think many of the injured bikers that I knew "threw themselves" into trees!

Hi Barabara:  I checked out the web site for Endless river Adventures and think that I might take you up on that invitation.  I'm actually thinking (very early in the process) of retiring to western North Carolina and would love to get involved in that kind of whitewater kayaking.

It's going to be a while before I "throw" myself into any trees, but I'm looking forward to avoiding them as I hurl my way towards them!

Bob-  Sounds like a GREAT day!  This post has nothing to do with real estate, but EVERYTHING TO DO WITH LIFE!  Let us know when you go again!  All the best!

Bob, I just realized that I was logged in under my client Barbara Reeves account when I posted info about Endless River Adventures. If you were to contact them and tell them Barbara sent you, they wouldn't have a clue. Sorry about that!

ActiveRain seems to have the two of us confused, so until I figure out why AR is seeing me as Barbara, tell 'em Suzanne Stephens sent you!

I'm envious of your plans to retire to the WNC mountains; my idea of heaven! Can't get my husband to move there, so I'm working on the next best thing, which is getting my son to move here!

... and Bob goes riding off into the sunset... Love that -- I remember the thrill of learning to ride the bike down a big hill --- wind in the hair -- it was the best. So glad you are recovering fine, just in timefor summer and the wonderful outdoor weather. Take care! ~ Julianna

Suzanne:  Let me get this straight??? You have an AR alter ego?  Pretty wild! ;-)  Well, be it from Clark Kent or from Superman, I appreciate the input!

Kevin:  Thanks for the comment...went riding again tonight just out of my driveway and into the country..considering that I live within 15 miles of the Arch, that by itself is pretty wild...Went looking for an old army fort, Fort Belle Fountaine and according to Sprint's GPS and directions...it isn't there anymore!

Oh well, still had a good ride!  Caught myself looking at Touring bikes online tonight, so I had better watch it or get out there and sell something!

Julianna:  My girlfriend is riding with me and she hasn't ridden a bicycle since she was a teen ager.  While it hasn't been that long for me, we're both relearning that thrill....I can't believe more people aren't into it!

Thanks for the comment!

Rotator Cuff surgery is such a PAIN!  Literally!  I have had some major surgery in my life and the Rotator Cuff thing was THE worst - sorry you had to go through it!  Also...my kids tell me that when guys become serious bikers they shave their legs so if they fall the gravel doesn't get into their leg hair - hope you are one of the hairless ones...otherwise you had further pain!

Hi Joan:  Thanks for the comment!  I've been lucky and this is the first time I've gone under the knife (other than a couple of minor things like having an ingrown toe nail removed) and it was indeed a pain.  From what my doctor tells me I won't be back to full function for up to a year and a half from now!

That said, I'm ahead of schedule for my recovery and consider myself to be fortunate!

Regarding the shaving of my legs...well, I'll leave them the way that they are...hairy....and hopefully won't crash and burn anytime soon!  Again, thanks for the comment!
