Montgomery County, Maryland was founded in 1776

Montgomery County, Maryland was founded in 1776 when Thomas S. Wootton thought of dividing Frederick County into three smaller counties (Frederick, Montgomery, and Washington counties).

In 1798 an act was passed to divide the county into five election districts and in 1799 commissioners were appointed who marked out the divisions forming the five original districts.

This landowner map, by Martenet and Bond (1865), shows the districts:

Berry

Clarksburg

Cracklin

Medley

Rockville

I love old maps like the one pictured.  Recently, I had the opportunity to view a map that provided the boundaries of several town within Sacramento County.  However, when I look at Sacramento now, it's difficult to tell where one leaves off and another begins.  When I was a kid, you could easily find the borders.

Hi Roy... Charlotte is such a "new" city in terms of its explosive growth in the past 30 years, it's easy to forget that our Mecklenburg County was found in 1762 and Charlote in 1768. Like Montgomery County, we've been around since before there was an "official" United States of America.
