Gratitude Post #2 for November Contest for Debe Maxwell, CRS

DUTY, HONOR, COUNTRY.

THOSE THREE HALLOWED WORDS REVERENTLY

DICTATE WHAT YOU OUGHT TO BE, WHAT YOU CAN BE,

WHAT YOU WILL BE." ---DOUGLAS MACARTHUR

Three strangers came together and had dinner last night. Myself and two gentlemen. We were the only three in the restaurant and we each sat at different tables. Before the waitress got to me, one man leaned over and we started talking. As a New Yorker his voice projected and our conversations got real interesting. It didn't take long before the gentleman on the other side of the room carried his plate, fork, and glass across the room to the other man's table and I automatically followed. We talked and ate our meals, discussing hot issues that are important. As Veterans and as a widow of a Veteran we all had more than a mouthful to say. Respectfully, we listened without judgment.

It seemed as though the three of us were meant to be there and the other man said, this is what our country needs, people to sit down and talk about the issues we are hearing on the news and discuss them as civil human beings. The other man, a Teacher with a different accent  made a point to say, these are global issues about war impacting everyone on earth. We the people need to talk like human being and share our viewpoints and stories.

It did not take long to realize there were common threads between the three of us. As stories unfolded, we began to recognize we were more the same than different. Eyewitness news from Vets who have been fighting for freedom, the gripping stories about the impact current events have on families and children, our economy, and how students react as a result of what's going on in their homes and schools was enlightening. The soldiers that serve aren't coming from Ivy League schools and although young when enlisted, many who survive are wiser by far. There is a lot of sickness in our country and mental health is real. When people stop relying on fake news and learn to talk and get along and if there is genuine faith, liberty and freedom can be great at home and globally.

I cannot express my gratitude any clearer today as I did yesterday and everyday for their services.

Hello Patricia - finding the "common threads" is a lot easier as we ease into conversation where connection is part of that discussion.  It may not be so clear from the beginning but it's an amazing occurrence when and if it happens.  Sometimes in the moment.  Other times later.  Much later.  Hopefully.    Glad to read that it happened for you.

Michael Jacobs - I really am grateful too. The people who are living who are dying to talk are often afraid and don't have the opportunity but when the opportunity does present itself, and people are willing, it is the most meaningful time you can imagine. The tapestry of our life is pulled together by many common threads.

Thank you for reading and providing such a meaningful comment.

Good morning, Patricia... those who serve in the military write a blank check to us with their lives. How totally amazing is that? And how can we not but show gratitude for that every day of the year and not just today? I well remember how shamefully we treated our veterans after Viet Nam... and I'm happy that the nation's sentiments have turned since then. God bless our Veterans and God bless the USA.

Good morning to you, Nina... I could write a book about my life marrying a man just discharged from the Army after serving in Vietnam. The way he was treated, snobbed in public, and the jobs I had to take because nobody would hire him, except s#%! jobs was so humilating to him. Helping him to pull himself up by his bootstraps without turning my back was so hard, you can't imagine. We stayed married for better or worse, until death did he part.

Good morning Patricia. What a special opportunity to meet and enjoy others in a meaningful way. That said, I hate the expression fake news, as it was contrived by the biggest faker of all time.

Sheila Anderson - I was very grateful to have a good meal and enjoy good company having great and meaningful conversations. Coincidence or not, I have deep gratitude for those who served and can talk in a civil manner.

Patricia, what an amazing evening you 3 shared. Instead of 3 strangers eating solitary meals, you ended up together, with meaningful conversation which is a rarity in itself.

I'm sorry your husband faced such discrimination and unkindness. No matter what we think of the war in Vietnam, those who served weren't responsible and no one deserves to be treated the way so many veterans were.

Lottie Kendall .... thanks for having such a compassionate heart. I think if there is one thing that hurts more than anything else is when one member of a family is shunned, the whole family suffers. Prejudice and discrimination is as bad as bullying. But then again, aren't they all connected? I think of it as a Crucifixion without the nails and the cross. The invisible and emotional burden is excruciating.

By the way, some of the most fascinating people and interesting stories I heard were from making conversations with people like the ones I met yesterday.

Patricia than you for sharing your dinner experience with us.

I often wonder how did we get to this point, where people only talk with those they agree with, and hate instead of respect for different points of view seem to be the driving force.

George Souto - you raise good questions. There is no shame in having a different point of view but sadly, many people make it that way. Hate really is a crime and unfortunately, too many people don't care.

Hi Patricia there is so much wisdom in your post....so much. Sitting down together, sharing experiences in a respectful way is what I hope comes back in fashion with the greater society. What a gift you 3 were given and gave to each other - and now us. Thank you!

When people stop relying on fake news and learn to talk and get along and if there is genuine faith, liberty and freedom can be great at home and globally.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, GRI, WLS - thank you for the surprise feature in the BananaTude Group, especially since I was supposed to be Moderator today! Also, thank you for acknowledging how important it is for people to talk and not be afraid for it is fear that causes war and enemies and we really have had enough of that, haven't we?

Also, I just want to say thank you for setting up this amazing Group where we can uplift each other and inspire. You really are a gift to all of us here on ActiveRain.

Hi Patricia I often times will go most daus day  feature a post that stands out to met You are welcome to do the same as well on every day! Your post particularily spoke to me today! Respect and civility as well as listening to each other is so important and it appears it's very out of fashion in the main stream crowd.  I hope we can bring it back in time.....

Roy Kelley - Indeed it was a very special occasion for we were hungry to be heard and each of us listened. These were honorable men I dined with and I have not felt so respected by strangers like this in a very, very long time.

I loved reading this post, Patricia. I agree that people need to talk civil to each other. You said it clearly ..."When people stop relying on fake news and learn to talk and get along and if there is genuine faith, liberty and freedom can be great at home and globally."

Rebecca Gaujot, Realtor® - I think many people forget that communication is a gift. I can not imagine living in a silent world or in world where people are screaming out loud to try to prove they are right. Having the ability to articulate to one another so that each person hears and listens while points are made with respect is something lacking in today's society. At the end of our meals and by the time it was time to leave, we were completely satisfied and there was no room for dessert. Being civil is really, really good.

I appreciate your comment very much. Thank you.

We really don't have to be strangers, do we?

I have often said "we are all more alike than we are different".  I have common things that line up with almost everyone.  And we should be able to sit down and have civil discussions and find solutions.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP

Amen Tammy Lankford, there really isn't much difference between who we are once we sit down and get to know each other and listen. Taking the initiative to sit down and listen, discuss, and "find solutions" is the only way effective communication really works. It is so nice to hear from you!
