On November 19, 2019, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and the U.S. Census Bureau reported nationwide housing building permits up 5.0% to 1,461,000 units in October of 2019 from 1,391,000 units in September of 2019, and jumped 14.1% from 1,281,000 in October of 2018. Single family building permits increased 3.2% to a rate of 909,000 units in October of 2019, from 881,000 units in September of 2019, and there were 505,000 multifamily building permits issued in October of 2019.
Nationwide housing starts gained 3.8% to 1,314,000 units in October of 2019, from 1,266,000 units in September of 2019 and rose 8.5% from 1,211,000 units in October of 2018. Single family starts higher 2.0% to a rate of 936,000 units in October of 2019 from 918,000 in September of 2019, and there were 362,000 multifamily building starts in October of 2019.
Nationwide housing completions increased 10.3% to 1,256,000 units in October of 2019 from 1,139,000 units in September of 2019, and jumped 12.4% from 1,248,000 units in October of 2018. Single family completions grew 4.5% to a rate of 897,000 units in October of 2019, from 858,000 units in September of 2019, and there were 354,000 multifamily completions in October of 2019.
