Special offer

Yesterday, I was not at my best.

It started at 1 AM on Friday.  I woke up and looked at my Facebook.  Someone had posted inflammatory fake news earlier and I refuted it.  I had started a minor flame war.  I woke up and got my sources added to my comments.  By then I was awake.  I stayed awake until 4:30 AM.  I only fell asleep by taking advantage of my diabetes and eating lots of carbs to raise my sugar (not an approved way to get sleep).  I woke up groggy.

I went to synagogue and before I even entered the door I annoyed 2 of my friends.  We are all OK now but I was in a mood.  I was not supposed to use my cell phone but I was looking at it when the Rabbi called me up to say a blessing over a Torah reading.  I nearly jumped in my seat.   I got through that with only a minor stumble at the end.

I noticed that the other agent on my land deal tried to reach me so I left the service.  I went on the phone and he proceeded to say that his client didn't think the deal was worth what we settled on over one month ago.  They were going to offer my client $35,000 less.  We talked.  He is supposed to send me something in writing.  I warned him that it might take a couple of days to talk to my clients (they are traveling) and I needed advice from my broker.   As I walked hung up and walked back towards the synagogue I muttered a #$## word.  I opened the door and everyone was pouring out.  My friend told me the whole congregation had heard.

We had scheduled some fun stuff but I had to delay it in order to deal with the crisis at hand.  I spoke to my former broker who hold the deal still.  I texted my new broker (who was having an early Thanksgiving with family ) that I needed to speak to him  early next week.  I reached my client.  I reached the other person interested in the land.  After that we  proceeded to the fun stuff.

The day actually got better.  We had lunch and Turkish coffee (Yum).  Did some errands.  Than the wife of one of my potential customers called, demanding to know what her husband had signed at the listing agreement.   I handled it well.   I told her it was an agency disclosure brochure and the signature was just evidence that I gave it to him.  She said he didn't have it, so I emailed her a copy.  I rested for a bit then hosted the ending of the Sabbath (Havdallah) at my house.  We had a lovely time with yummy food and two new people.

As I reflect on the day I think maybe I should have left the phone alone all day like I was supposed to.

Good morning, Debbie... I've learned not to miss my phone when I'm ready to put it aside. Otherwise it becomes an electronic jailor.

I agree with Nina. For some time, my kids and husband would literally hide my phone from me. I was upset the first time and then realized it was for my own good and my family needed me. Now, I set it aside. Everything can wait, at least a few hours or a day when prepared and at a good stopping point.

Good morning Debbie. I think your conclusion is correct. I think you should have left it alone too.

Hi Debbie - your difficult day created a wise thought. Hard to do but one we should all take heed:

As I reflect on the day I think maybe I should have left the phone alone all day like I was supposed to.

Sometimes days just don't go well. And while it is difficult to put the phone on silent, sometimes it is definitely needed so we can focus on life!
